Job Summary

The East & South East London NHS Pathology Partnership (Pathology Partnership) is a Pathology network formed across three NHS Trusts: Barts Health, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

Barts Health is one of the largest Trusts in the UK, with a turnover in excess of £1.25 billion and a workforce of over 15,000 staff. We have wide range of diagnostic specialities due to an acute teaching hospital environment and diversity of the local population. The Cellular Pathology Division provides diagnostic and screening services for the whole of North East London and has a combined workload of 70,000 histology and 5,000 non-gynae cytology specimens. The successful candidate will be joining a friendly team of scientists and Doctors in a modern laboratory and have the opportunity to learn a wide variety of histology techniques. Our facilities are close to underground and DLR services. The laboratory has UKAS accreditation and is HCPC accredited. We are looking for a competent and versatile individual with substantive experience in Cellular Pathology to provide technical support to the histology service. To be suitable for this role you must have a degree in Biomedical Science and be registered with the HCPC.Applications are welcomed from candidates with suitable experience with the appropriate qualification.Appointment will be subject to references and proof of a good attendance record.

Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience post HCPC registration in Cellular Pathology laboratory
  • Experience of working with Laboratory Information Management System

Desirable

  • Experience of staff training
  • Experience of digital pathology

Skills

Essential

  • Able to follow standard operating procedures
  • Numeracy and literacy
  • Able to undertake histopathology laboratory techniques
  • Able to work to deadlines with accuracy
  • Able to work under pressure
  • Good communication skills

Knowledge

Essential

  • IT Literate including use of Microsoft word and data analysis
  • Up to date knowledge of advances in histopathology
  • Familiar with laboratory health and safety issues
  • Knowledge of Quality Management and the processes involved

Qualifications

Essential

  • IBMS Accredited BSc Biomedical Science degree
  • Completed registration portfolio
  • Registration with the HCPC as a biomedical scientist

  • Able to undertake ‘house-keeping duties’
  • Able to perform required duties with any appropriate aids or adaptations
  • Able to work independently and work within a team of mixed skills and abilities
  • Able to organise and prioritise own work activities
  • Hold no reservations in handling human body fluids, tissue, organs, or infected material in accordance with Health & Safety policies.
  • The post holder must be willing to have appropriate vaccinations
