Job Summary

We are recruiting an Assistant Psychologist to support our service in carrying out 2 exciting new projects for patients in Cancer Care. These projects will involve assisting a Clinical Psychologist in developing, implementing and evaluating interventions aimed at reducing the psychological impact of treatment for people with Haematological Malignancy, and at reducing psychological barriers to cancer treatment across all tumour groups. Funding has been secured for 18 months.

 

Main duties of the job

We will be looking for someone with a higher class undergraduate degree in psychology which confers Graduate Basis for Registration with the British Psychological society (or equivalent), who also has relevant experience in a clinical healthcare setting, with excellent skills in communication and data management. You will work closely with the qualified Practitioner Psychologist in consulting the evidence base, liaising with multidisciplinary teams to develop screening and assessment protocols, developing interventions, and fully evaluating the effectiveness to support bids to expand the psychological workforce on a substantive basis.

Qualifications

Essential

  • An upper second or First class undergraduate Psychology degree (from a BPS accredited course), conferring graduate basis for registration (GBR) or equivalent.
  • Evidence of on-going professional development in health, mental health or social care

Desirable

  • Post graduate qualification in a relevant subject, e.g. diploma, MSc in a clinical subject relevant to the post

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a health, mental health or social care setting
  • Experience of conducting research projects or audits

Desirable

  • Experience of working in a physical health setting or with people with long term health conditions
  • Experience of teaching and training others
  • Experience facilitating therapeutic groups or contributing to the delivery of psycho-educational interventions.
  • Experience of administering psychometric assessments

Technical Skills Competencies

Essential

  • Well-developed IT skills, normally obtained through practice or practical training. Demonstrable experience of using word processing, spread sheet, database and presentation software.
  • Skills in audit / data collection / statistical analysis for service improvement or research, including management of databases, and data analysis
  • High level written and verbal communication skills including the ability to adapt sensitive information for multiple audiences.
  • Knowledge and skills for maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.

  • High standard of record keeping and report writing

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of psychology and mental health as applied to healthcare
  • Awareness of how psychological factors influence the way in which people manage physical ill health
  • Graduate level knowledge of research methodology and statistical analysis

  • Knowledge about the impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment on emotional wellbeing
