Job Summary

The Diabetes Department is seeking a technician with a passion for diabetes technologies. The successful candidate will work closely with people living with diabetes, supporting them to set up and use various diabetes technologies safely.

This role requires excellent organizational and communication skills. Responsibilities include coordinating the delivery of technology to patients and the outpatient department, setting up and supervising new technology starts, and liaising with the public, the diabetes team, the outpatient clinic team, and industry partners.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the operational management of diabetes technology administration processes and functions, including continuous glucose monitoring and hybrid closed-loop technology. This patient-facing role involves liaising with patients to ensure timely access to diabetes technologies.
  • Manage the day-to-day setup and delivery of diabetes technologies for people living with diabetes.
  • Work as a diabetes department technician, assisting in the delivery of diabetes services within specialist areas.
  • Teach people how to use various diabetes technologies effectively and safely.
  • Arrange and conduct independent clinics to demonstrate diabetes technology and ensure patients are confident and safe using it.
  • Download and transfer data from diabetes technologies for clinicians to utilize during clinical consultations, and instruct patients on how to download their own data at home.
  • Provide troubleshooting advice to patients experiencing issues with their diabetes technology.
  • Maintain and update the user records on technology platforms used by the diabetes clinic.
  • Order and manage technology supplies for the department.
  • Supervise pump and sensor upgrade sessions delivered by diabetes technology representatives.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Awareness and understanding of Diabetes Technician role in terms of the NHS Plan and recent initiatives within diabetes
  • Previous healthcare experience
  • Demonstrable interest to the commitment to the professional development in yourself and in others.

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ level 3 in clinical laboratory support, BTEC in STEM or evidence further study diploma/degree level

Skills

Essential

  • Computer literacy – Advanced level of IT literacy with experience of using a range of IT applications
  • Excellent communications skills: Able to communicate effectively in relation to own role through the use of effective written and verbal communication skills
