Main duties of the job

The Microbiology & Virology Department at UHS is excited to advertise an opportunity for a Trainee Biomedical Scientist with a strong background in clinical lab experience. We also welcome applicants who can demonstrate that they already meet the required competencies may be offered a Band 5 contract upon appointment.

This is a training post for candidates who, within 12 months of appointment:

– Will have graduated with an HCPC approved Biomedical Science degree- Or will have finished the required top up modules- They will have finished their IBMS registration portfolio- And are capable of achieving HCPC registration

The department processes over 1,000,000 specimens per year. We employee almost 100 staff and provide a comprehensive 24/7 service covering bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology and parasitology and molecular testing.

We are IBMS accredited for pre-registration training and specialist training in medical microbiology, virology, and infectious science.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential

  • HCPC approved Biomedical Science degree (BSc) or other HCPC approved degree/top ups
  • Capable of achieving HCPC registration
  • Evidence of current CPD activities
  • Capable of completing IBMS portfolio within 12 months

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a medical laboratory
  • IT competency (Microsoft, Outlook, hospital IT systems)
