Job Summary

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a heart condition or defect that develops in the womb before a baby is born. Heart defects are diagnosed in at least 1 in 150 births, which equates to an average of 13 babies each day in the UK. Estimates suggest as many as 1-2 per cent of the population may be affected.

Newcastle Upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust is responsible for the only cardiothoracic centre in the UK that provides adult and paediatric (congenital) heart and lung surgery, heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support all under one roof. Our highly specialist services, for example transplant surgery, are offered to anyone in the UK with more complex heart or lung related conditions.

We are currently looking for a strategically minded and technically astute individual to join the Cardiothoracic Services Data Team, as the CHD Data Manager.

Main duties of the job

As a senior member of the team you will directly manage staff as well as provide professional and technical support to the wider team. On occasion, you will identify users to manage specific tasks and deliver specialist training to ensure staff knowledge and skillsets are fit for purpose.

You will communicate with a range of professions both internally and externally to the Trust. The postholder will develop and maintain good working relationships with others and ensure information is effectively sourced for various areas and accurately transferred between sources. However, in addition to coordinating dataflows you will build subject matter expertise about the information being collected. As such, you will act as a key stakeholder in undertaking critical analysis and promulgating key findings to senior management and clinical staff across the organisation and wider network.

As a data team we are continuously looking to develop how we capture data/information and how it is used to promote learning, quality improvement and highlight opportunities for improving patient care. Therefore, in this role you will be an advocate for driving innovation and continuously improving ways of working across the team.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential

  • Relevant Degree Qualification
  • ECDL or equivalent qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of identifying processes to improve efficiency of data processing
  • Awareness of current data protection legislation
  • Significant experience of both patient and process data collection
  • Experience or knowledge of electronic records
  • Experience in analysing large data sets
  • Experience in producing high quality reports, manipulating data, performing data analysis and producing reports in tabular, graphical and other formats
  • Specialist knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint, Excel and Access (databases) to ECDL level or equivalent
  • Experience in data/database/information management
  • Ability to analyse problems in real time and understand user requirements
  • Experience of staff line management
  • Proven experience of project management
  • Experience of working in a healthcare environment

Desirable

  • PC Support/knowledge of IT networks
  • Knowledge of medical terms and procedures
  • Microsoft SQL Server and Query
  • Experience of supporting a Congenital Heart Disease Service
  • Experience in implementing or maintaining paperless working environments
