Children’s Speech and Language Therapist ( Early Years clinics and Mainstream Schools)

Do you want to develop your skills in meeting the needs of children and young people with speech language and communication difficulties in clinics and mainstream schools?

The Haringey Speech and Language Therapy Service works in clinics, special schools and all primary and secondary schools in Haringey alongside Specialist Language Support and Autism Teachers from the Local Authority.

We have Band 5 posts based within the Early Years clinics and Mainstream Schools Services. There is the opportunity to work to develop your clinical skills across, language, speech, social communication and stammering caseloads. We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Speech and Language Therapist who is keen to work with children with speech language and communication difficulties in clinic, early years settings and mainstream schools.

 

Main duties of the job

 

You will be responsible for your own caseloads of children and will provide assessment and intervention for children in addition to providing support and advice toparents and nursery and school staff.

This post will suit a newly qualified SLT, including those graduating this year, returning SLTs or SLTs from other specialities wishing to work in early years and clinics.

Our large and friendly team comprises newly qualified and experienced therapists. There are specialist SLTs for children with complex needs; emotional and behavioural difficulties; speech and voice disorders; deafness; stammering; selective mutism; DLD; learning difficulties and regional Makaton trainers who will be at hand to support you. You will also have your own clinical supervisor who will be able to offer you weekly, fortnightly or monthly supervision depending on your experience. A senior SLT will complete your competencies (as needed), appraisals and Personal Development Plans with you.

Education / Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma, Degree or MSC in Speech and Language Therapy
  • HCPC and RCSLT Registration

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to assess and prioritise for therapy.
  • Problem solving and Organisational skills
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to deal with distressed people in stressed situations
  • A commitment to the challenge of the job

Desirable

  • An ability to speak another language relevant to the Haringey population – especially Spanish, Turkish, Polish, Somali or a West African language

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with children in clinics and running groups
  • Experience of training others e.g. school staff/parents/carers
  • Awareness of clinical governance and how this is reflected in your day to day work
  • Theoretical knowledge of alternative/augmentative communication at undergraduate level e.g. symbols
  • Knowledge of Child Protection guidelines
  • Knowledge of the EHCP process

  • Ability to take majority of leave in school holidays
