Job Summary

As a Biomedical Assistant Team Leader, you will be responsible for the day to day running and organisation of workload and staffing within the Pre- analytics Sections of Barnsley Blood Sciences.

The Pre-analytics Section covers the Blood Sciences Reception area and a team of Biomedical Assistants who work within Blood sciences.

The main function of the Central Reception area is the receipt of all Pathology requests from Barnsley Trust and Primary Care.

Routine samples are either registered for analysis or re-distributed to additional laboratories within Barnsley Pathology. This area runs 24/7 365 days a year.

The Biomedical Assistants work core hours (Monday -Friday 08:45-21:00) and maintain the urgent sample pathway, package and post all analysis not performed on site and support the registration processes in Blood Transfusion.

This role will manage circa 30wte band 2 and band 3 staff and will be supported with an existing Band 4 Central Reception supervisor.

Main duties of the job

Day to day organisation of the areas workflows.

Direct supervision of both areas 08:45-20:00.

Maintenance of documentation and quality procedures for these areas.

First line human resources duties, including:

  • Maintaining staffing rosters, including organisation of overtime with line managers
  • Sickness reviews and return to work (up to stage 2)

To carry out complex analytical and processing procedures.

To be responsible for the production of accurate and timely Laboratory testing.

To maintain high scientific and technical standards.

Promote and maintain a high standard of relevant education and training.

Adhere to all STH Trust, SYBP and Departmental Policies.

To stimulate and take part in scientific and technical developments.

Person Specification

Education

Essential

  • Level 4 qualification e.g. NVQ, HNC, BTEC, Apprenticeship or IBMS Certificate of Achievement (Part II) plus extensive laboratory experience or Foundation Level Degree

Experience

Essential

  • Experience with a range of laboratory techniques

Desirable

  • Discipline specific NHS laboratory experience

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Keyboard and basic IT skills
  • Have an awareness of Health & Safety issues
  • Effective Communication skills, written and oral

Personal Qualities

Essential

  • Ability to plan, prioritise and allocate work
