Job Summary

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as an Acute Oncology Cancer Support Worker.

We are delighted to have an opportunity to recruit a Acute Oncology Cancer Support Worker to join our established team of Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse/ Practitioner Specialists and Acute Oncology Cancer Support Workers.

Working with Acute Oncology to improve the patient experience, you will coordinate referrals to ensure that patients are seen promptly and by the most appropriate person.

You will work mainly at EDGH Hospital, and be expected to cross cover where needed.

Main duties of the job

You are likely to have some experience of cancer and may have a background in healthcare. This is not an essential factor and transferrable skills and a willingness to learn are equally important.

It is essential to have excellent interpersonal skills, to be flexible and enthusiastic. To work with inclusivity and kindness, mindful of our Trust values.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ/Foundation Degree level qualification relevant to role
  • Qualification and knowledge of patient assessment, planning, developing and implementing programmes of care
  • Evidence of mandatory and statutory essential training skills, for example, Basic Life Support, manual handling, infection control, fire etc

Desirable

  • Training/ qualification relevant to role to demonstrate skills

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in working in a care/clinical environment, knowledge and expertise acquired through training to deliver role

Desirable

  • NHS experience or relevant health care organisation

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Essential

  • Knowledge skills and skills that demonstrate the ability to assess, plan, develop and implement programmes of care
  • Ability to apply judgement and problem solve
  • Able to support learners and clinical supervision of junior staff.
  • Digital skills, use of systems/report writing and presentation skills able to maintain work-related record keeping and database information.

Desirable

  • Able to manage people, support staff wellbeing and development if relevant to role

Other

Essential

  • Flexibility in working hours and patterns
  • IT skills, data collection, use / completion of Somerset cancer registry database
  • Able to manage the physical and emotional demands of the role, including moving and handling of patients, able to concentrate to provide clinical care, communication of distressing or unwelcome information
  • Full driving licence and access to a vehicle (for domiciliary community role) and ability to travel between sites
