Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Administrator and Tissue Coordinator to join the Mortuary Team at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are seeking a motivated and organised individual with experience working within a mortuary environment, ideally in a mortuary support or administrative role. While previous experience is desirable, comprehensive training will be provided for the successful candidate.

In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate and robust traceability records for all post-mortem retained tissue and whole organs, ensuring full compliance with Human Tissue Authority (HTA) regulations and standards.

You will have a good understanding of HTA legislation, standards, and relevant codes of practice, particularly those relating to traceability, consent, retention of tissue and organs, and the wishes of bereaved families.

You will provide administrative and operational support to the Mortuary Team, undertaking a range of office-based duties, maintaining departmental records, and assisting with the cleanliness and upkeep of the mortuary environment.

You will also support the Anatomical Pathology Technologists (APTs) with the admission and release of deceased patients, as well as carrying out routine daily condition and compliance checks to ensure the highest standards of care, dignity, and governance are maintained at all times.

 

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work Monday to Friday across Watford General and Hemel Hempstead Hospital sites, supporting the senior team in the daily operations of the Mortuary.

Reporting to the Senior Site APT, with direct accountability to the Mortuary Manager, they will ensure compliance with regulations concerning retained post-mortem tissue.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications:

Essential

  • GCSE grades C and above in English, Science and Maths.

Desirable

  • Other higher education qualifications.
  • A-Levels or equivalent in related subjects e.g. Biology.

Knowledge:

Essential

  • Understanding about the role of the Mortuary and the work of APT’s.
  • Understanding of the HTA standards and requirements for retention/disposal of human tissue.

Desirable

  • Good understanding of medical terminology.

Experience:

Essential

  • Exposure to a Mortuary environment.
  • Hands on experience with deceased patients and tissue from the deceased.
  • Experience with customer facing roles, involving good communication.

Desirable

  • Experience with the legal requirements for identification of a deceased.
  • Experience of release of deceased.
  • Experience speaking to bereaved relatives.
