Job summary

The States of Guernsey are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Mental Health Service.

This is a full-time post for a Consultant in Adult Psychiatry covering the adult inpatient ward and also providing 2 sessions in Primary Care Liaison.

Crevichon Ward is the islands only Adult Inpatient Ward, which is therefore general by necessity. It has 14 beds on the main ward, with 2 in extra care and 1 in high care, for those in need of a separate environment. The ward has an average occupancy of between 60-70% and has an experienced, dedicated Associate Specialist, purely covering the inpatient ward.

This post will also have 2 sessions dedicated to Primary Care Liaison, spread between the 3 on island GP practice groups and the island of Alderney.

Main duties of the job

This is a full-time post for a Consultant in Adult Psychiatry covering the single adult inpatient ward and also providing sessions as Primary Care Liaison.

The post will be based at the Oberlands Centre, where all the Mental Health Teams and Inpatient Wards are located. Crevichon Ward is the islands only Adult Inpatient Ward, which is therefore general by necessity.

It has 14 beds on the main ward, with 2 in extra care and 1 in high care, for those in need of a separate environment.

There is also a seclusion room. All rooms are single occupancy, with en-suite facilities. The ward has an average occupancy of between 60-70% and has an experienced, dedicated Associate Specialist, purely covering the inpatient ward.

This post will also have 2 sessions dedicated to Primary Care Liaison, spread between the 3 on island GP practice groups and the island of Alderney.

The Clinical Director and Associate Director are responsible for agreeing the job plan with the applicant and Consultant colleagues.

Remuneration for this post will be in accordance with the HSC consultants pay scale as below. Unlike in the UK, a pensionable CEA award is made to consultants in HSC based on length of service and is included in the total remuneration.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration with General Medical Council
  • Possession of MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Name on Specialist Register or equivalent, with CCT in General Adult Psychiatry
  • Wide and recent experience of General Adult Psychiatry
  • Experience in managing high risk and complex mental health issues
  • A proven record of clinical leadership
  • A proven record of providing continuity of care within a substantive post
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary team working
  • Relevant teaching and continuing medical education activity
  • Evidence of a commitment to quality eg clinical audit
  • Experience in research activity
  • Ability to contribute to the effective overall management of the mental health service
  • Evidence of recent continual professional development
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
