Job summary

This is a great opportunity to join one of the biggest paediatric plastic surgery departments in the country within a dedicated children’s hospital.

The appointee will provide paediatric burns and plastic surgery care, with a specialist interest in craniofacial surgery. This post would suit a candidate with a passion for paediatric plastic surgery and an interest in craniofacial surgery with an opportunity to develop another subspecialty interest.

Thesuccessful candidate will participate in a 1:6 on call for plastic surgery and burns at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital at Category A.

The post-holder will report through the Clinical Director for plastic surgery to the Chief Medical Officer with professional support from the Divisional Director of Surgery.

Main duties of the job

Alder hey craniofacial team has been nationally commissioned since 1997 and provides a comprehensive portfolio of paediatric and adult craniofacial activity with an emphasis on delivering innovative high-quality outcomes assessment. The team works across a broad swathe of Northern England including outreach clinics in Manchester and Belfast and is a recognized world-leading provider.

Alder Hey provides general paediatric services for the local paediatric population receiving referrals from both general practitioners and the Emergency Department (the busiest paediatric Emergency Department in Europe). There is a wide spectrum of paediatric trauma, including combined orthoplastic management of lower limb trauma.

Alder Hey is one of six paediatric burn centres and admits burn patients of all severities, including those requiring Paediatric Intensive Care. A substantial proportion of the plastic surgery carried out by the hospital is the tertiary level care, including children with burns and congenital abnormalities such as vascular and hand anomalies. There is a comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment facilities with access to a full aspect of paediatric specialist expertise on site. A multidisciplinary team performs paediatric craniofacial surgery as a supra-regional speciality and the Trust provides a regional Cleft Lip and Palate Service.

Person Specification

Education & Training

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice
  • MBBS, FRCS (Plast) or equivalent
  • MRCPCH/MRCP or equivalent degree
  • CCT or within 6 months of CCT (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Higher degree equivalent to MPhil, MD or PhD level
  • Emergency Management of Severe Burns
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support

Experience

Essential

  • Higher specialist training in Plastic Surgery or equivalent
  • Demonstrable interest in paediatric plastic surgery

Desirable

  • Paediatric plastic surgery fellowship
