This post is for one year commencing from 02/09/2026 until 02/09/27.
Our Paediatric team comprises of both Acute and Community Paediatrics, however the focus of the LED job would predominantly be supporting the “Tier 2” or “Middle grade” rota on the acute side of our department. We have 24 inpatient paediatric beds, including a Level 1 High Dependency Unit, and a 10 cot Special Care Unit for neonates.

Main duties of the job
-Review, management and “senior decision making” for acute paediatric admissions to the Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit and Louisa Cary children’s ward.
-Review, management and “senior decision making” for patients in the Emergency Department and ED Resus who have been referred to paediatric by GP or ED.
-Taking referrals over the phone and offering advice, guidance and signposting to GPs and Emergency Physicians regarding paediatric patients.
-Review, management and “senior decision making” for neonates born in Torbay, including supporting Tier 1 staff to attend deliveries, admit patients to SCU and oversee/support the day to day activity on SCU ward.
-Undertake supervised general paediatric and rapid access clinics, and complete dictations and patient correspondence in a timely manner.
-Holding the emergency “crash” bleep for acute paediatric and neonatal emergencies and undertaking initial stages of resuscitation of newborns, babies and children whilst awaiting consultant support.
-Management of a team of Tier 1 doctors to undertake the day-to-day workload and administration on SSPAU, SCBU and Louisa Cary children’s ward.
-Ensure that Tier 1 staff undertake timely and accurate completion of discharge summaries, neonatal “Badger” summaries, Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) and communications with primary and tertiary care paediatric specialities.
-Teaching and training of Tier 1 and junior staff.
