Job summary

This is a fulltime post; the successful applicant will be expected to work closely with the existing 11 Orthopaedic Surgeons to provide a comprehensive Trauma and Orthopaedic Service for the population of Somerset.

The post attracts a total of 10 PAs and includes being on call (1 in 8 weekdays and 1 in 8 for weekends) for General Orthopaedic Trauma. The post holder will be an orthopaedic surgeon with hip surgery and/or knee surgery as subspecialist interests. The post is predominately based and Yeovil Hospital, but the appointee must be prepared to work flexibly across the county at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton or possibly smaller community hospitals if required.

Main duties of the job

To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to inpatients, day case patients and outpatients who need elective Orthopaedic services, as outlined in the proposed programme.

To participate on 1:8 weekdays and 1:8 weekends general trauma rota, to carry out a post take ward round of all emergency admissions when on call, lead the post take morning trauma meetings and to provide appropriate follow up in fracture clinics along with new fracture clinic referrals.

The post holder will be expected to provide a full range of elective and trauma relevant to the speciality with surgery using both day surgery and in-patient operating lists. The post holder should fellowship trained.

To contribute to the academic life of the Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma continuing the excellent heritage of teaching junior medical staff, medical students and Departmental staff. Undertaking and promoting research initiatives within the Department is actively encouraged with on-site support from the hospitals research and development unit.

To participate actively in the Department’s Clinical Audit programme and contribute to the development of Clinical Quality and reporting at the monthly clinical audit meetings.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via
  • CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview date)
  • CESR or
  • European Community Rights
  • An appropriate equivalent orthopaedic surgical qualification.

Desirable

  • Fellowship trained.

Experience

Essential

  • Broad trauma and orthopaedic training with evidence of recent experience of all aspects of up-to-date trauma management
  • Subspecialty interest in Hip surgery with evidence of advanced fellowship training

Desirable

  • Evidence of unsupervised surgical experience.
