Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be actively involved to establish outpatient clinic template for his/her chosen specialist area and can include Falls/Stroke/TIA but any other specialist can be looked at too.
  • The post holder will have responsibility to provide care for inpatients on Care of Elderly ward as well as provide specialist care such as orthogeriatric/surgical liaison/stroke/TIA. The post holder will be supported by junior doctors’ middle grade.
  • The postholder will have the opportunity to be the clinical and educational supervisor for named trainees.
  • Developing existing clinical protocols and pathways to maximise efficiency in patient flow.
  • Working closely with the Diagnostic Clinical Support service departments to maximise the effective and efficient use of the beds.
  • Promoting effective communication within the departments and with the wider hospital by regular liaison with specialist medical and service departments within the hospital
  • Take part in the professional supervision and development of all the junior and middle grade doctors within the Elderly Medicine Wards including appraisal and personal development planning
  • Demonstrate commitment to, and participation in, Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit.

Person Specification

Qualifications/ Registration

Essential

  • Will be required to maintain full registration with the General Medical Council
  • Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of CCT
  • Medical degree, MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Advanced Life Support

Desirable

  • Post-graduate qualifications in medical education
  • Other tertiary qualifications

Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience postgraduate experience, including higher medical training
  • Previous experience as a Specialist Registrar. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential
  • Recent experience in Elderly Medicine
  • Experience of Ortho-geriatrics

Desirable

  • Overseas experience
  • Breadth of experience within and outside speciality

Knowledge & Clinical Skills

Essential

  • Knowledge and application of up to date evidence-based practice
  • Understanding of clinical risk management

Desirable

  • IT Skills
  • Interest in Medical management
