Job summary
South Tyneside and Gateshead sexual heath team has an exciting
opportunity for a passionate and committed Sexual Health Specialist Nurse. We are looking for a qualified sexual health
nurse, who is friendly and enthusiastic, with a flexible approach to provide
support to the clinical team. This is a
permanent part-time position, which will predominantly be based within the
community sexual health clinic at Gateshead Sexual Health Service in Trinity
Square Health Centre. However, there may be times when the employee would need
to work at Palmers Community Hospital in Jarrow and outreach clinical
locations.
We are a friendly, community based, multi-disciplinary team. We are committed to delivering high quality,
integrated sexual health care for the local population, our service includes
both contraceptive and genito-urinary medicine.
The post-holder must be able to maintain a sensitive and non-judgemental
approach to support patients with their sexual health needs.
Main duties of the job
The
sexual health service is part of the community directorate within South
Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust.
The
successful candidate will be an experienced Specialist Sexual Health Nurse,
and:
Demonstrate they have previous
experience working within an integrated sexual health service
Maintain and respect strict
confidentiality standards for service users
Maintain a sensitive and
non-judgemental approach when working with service users
The post holder will be required to
work evening and weekend duties as part of a monthly roster.
The post holder will be required to
travel between clinic locations and for meetings as necessary.
The post holder will work
effectively as part of the wider sexual health team and demonstrate excellent
communication skills.

- Evidence of innovation in practice
- Evidence of practice development
- Awareness of national health and social care policy
- Knowledge of best practice in sexual and reproductive health
- Knowledge of current issues relating to health service provision and
- the public health agenda
- Ability to practice confidentially within legal frameworks and policies
- Clinical teaching experience
- Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious
- information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training,
- empathic or reassurance skills are required
- Able to work without supervision
- Competent in the use of IT packages
- Proven interpersonal skills
Desirable
- Termination of pregnancy decision making and referral skills
Physical Skills
Essential
- Developed physical skills with a need for accuracy to undertake for
- example:
- Venepuncture
- Administration of local anaesthetic
- Insertion of contraceptive implant
- Basic keyboard skills
- Use of electronic resources to input, save and provide data and
- information, making full use of the electronic record system
Qualifications
Essential
- Current 1st level NMC registration
- Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree (UK
- equivalent)
- Practice assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience
- Recognised competency based qualifications in integrated sexual
- health e.g. Management of Sexually Transmitted Infections and
- Contraception in Practice, or Integrated Sexual Health Module, or
- equivalent
- Cervical cytology qualification
- Evidence of competency achievement in Sub-dermal implant
- insertion and removal
Desirable
- Non-medical prescribing or willingness to complete.
Experience
Essential
- Previous clinical experience of working within an integrated sexual
- health setting
- Experience of leading a team or experience of supervising junior
- staff
