Additional programmed activities may be available, but these are subject to annual discussion and agreement and do not form part of the underlying contractual agreement. Applicants are required to be on eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).

Main duties of the job

Consultant Anaesthetist at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The consultant appointment is a new post within the Anaesthetic team at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will provide a general anaesthetic elective and emergency service for a busy DGH hospital.

The post is a 1 in 14 non-resident on-call and will attract a 3% on-call frequency supplement. The department works flexibility in terms of lists and working days, however this can be negotiated. Candidates with an interest in acute pain management or perioperative medicine would be welcomed.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Registration

Essential

  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT)
  • Medical degree
  • FRCA or equivalent

Desirable

  • Further qualifications with a special interest

Knowledge

Essential

  • Commensurate with FRCA

Clinical Experience

Desirable

  • Special interest area (SIA) in Acute pain management
  • SIA in Obstetrics
  • SIA in perioperative medicine
  • Experience in conducting awake upper limb surgery

Communication Skills

Essential

  • Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills
  • Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels

Desirable

  • Knowledge and skills in Human Factors and Crisis Resource Management for anaesthesia

Teaching

Essential

  • Evidence of organising and delivering teaching at under-graduate and post graduate level

Desirable

  • Ability to be able to appraise both trainees and other staff
  • Evidence of Training in Medical Education

Leadership/ Management skills

Essential

  • Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
  • Ability to motivate and develop training medical staff

Personal Attributes

Essential

  • Ability to work effectively and productively in a team
  • Self-motivation and leadership skills
  • Appropriate IT skills for a consultant post in anaesthesia
  • Enthusiasm & ability to work under pressure

Other requirements

Essential

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of the Anaesthetic Directorate
  • To balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and the Trust as a whole
  • Demonstration of immunisation against Hepatitis B plus proof of HbsAg negative status
  • Will be required to maintain full registration with the GMC as well as remain on the Specialist Register
  • Will need to reside within 10 miles of the Hospital or half an hour’s travelling time for on call commitments

Research and Audit

Essential

  • Able to appraise research
  • Understanding of Evidence Based Medicine
  • Thorough understanding of the principles of audit

Desirable

  • Publications in peer reviewed journals in the field of anaesthesia and Critical Care
  • Participation anaesthesia based research

Experience/Training

Essential

  • Postgraduate experience including higher anaesthetic training. (Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential and dedicated training)
