Job summary

The Arts Curator (Sir Bobby Robson Institute) role is an exciting freelance opportunity to develop a public arts programme for The Sir Bobby Robson Institute (SBRI), a new purpose-built facility for the Freeman Hospital site. The design, finish and feel of the building is to be further enhanced through a series of commissioned and integrated artworks.

This role contributes to applying creativity to enhance the hospital experience and deepen engagement with our local communities.

You will be a motivated self-starter with a passion for creative community engagement, commissioning artworks, and for health and wellbeing. You will support the Head of Arts Programmes, in delivery of the SBRI Arts Plan.

The programme will commission artwork through participatory community and stakeholder creative opportunities, including Newcastle Hospitals staff, patients and families, to enhance the SBRI site; promote health and wellbeing and engage with the wider community.

Main duties of the job

  • Passionate and knowledgeable about the arts and the role of creativity, you will lead delivery of SBRI Arts Plan for Newcastle Hospitals Charity, working in partnership with a range of diverse organisations and community groups.
  • You will have experience of managing arts projects and have awareness of best practice of working with artists. You will have excellent organisational management skills and be able to communicate clearly with multiple stakeholders, such as Trust staff, patients, artists, cultural and community partners.
  • You will be enthusiastic about the Newcastle Hospital Charity Arts Programme, arts & health, and keen to be a strong advocate for the SBRI Arts Plan across the Trust. You will have specialist knowledge of arts commissioning and will stay informed of current arts practice.

  • Degree or equivalent professional experience in a similar role

  • Professional qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Significant post graduate experience of managing/organising/promoting visual arts commissioning programmes
  • Expert knowledge of management and delivery of visual arts commissioning programmes

Desirable

  • Previous experience of working in a healthcare and/or charity setting
  • Experience in arts & health (creative health) and/or public arts programmes

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Diplomacy, negotiating skills/abilities, well-developed social skills
  • Excellent IT experience, particularly of Microsoft packages
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to communicate and effectively manage contact with a wide range of stakeholders
