Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Metabolic Bone Disease team within the Geriatrics department at Cardiff & Vale UHB as a Consultant General Medicine Physician.

The Metabolic Bone Disease Service in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (CVUHB) was established in 1992 by Professor Mike Stone. It serves a local population of 445,000 people. In 2017, the service became Wales’ only Paget`s Association Centre of Excellence, and in 2023 was named as the only specialist centre for Rare Bone Disease in Wales.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join the Metabolic Bone Disease Service based in the three outpatient clinics each week and support the team with continuing and developing clinical, educational and research-based activities. The consultant will also undertake clinical sessions, which can be tailored to chosen speciality, in the form of ward-based sessions on a General Internal Medicine Ward. The GIM sessions would be based in UHL and would be utilised in the form of regular ward and board rounds to provide consultant oversight for 15 patients.

Participation in the Acute General Internal Medical On-call rota on a 1:19 basis will also form part of the overall post. A dedicated 0.7 session for ‘on-call in lieu’ is provided in the overall job plan to meet on call GIM OOH requirements which includes recognition for weekend working. This is in addition to the Intensity Banding 1 OOH provision with the post.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC / GDC registration with a licence to practise
  • Applicant should CCT/CESR at least in GIM and then have relevant experience or sub speciality CCT to allow completion of Metabolic Bone Health activity

Desirable

  • Higher Diploma or Degree e.g. Masters, PhD, MD, DSc

Experience

  • General Medicine and relevant specialty experience

  • Experience of working in a Metabolic Bone Health clinic or similar setting

Skills

  • Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working
  • Effective and demonstrable communication skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Self-motivated and flexible approach to work

Clinical Governance

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
  • Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation
