Job summary

The post is a Consultant in Perinatal Psychiatry based at Clover Ward Mother and Baby Unit, Melbury Lodge, Winchester, a nationally commissioned 8bed inpatient service caring for birthing parents with severe mental illness and their infants. The unit provides 24/7 admissions and manages complex conditions including postpartum psychosis, bipolar disorder and severe depression. As the document states, the MBU “undertakes the assessment, care and treatment of birthing parents…with serious mental illness” and supports the developing parent–infant relationship.

The consultant will join a well established multidisciplinary team and contribute to integrated inpatient–community perinatal pathways across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Core responsibilities include clinical leadership, MDT working, risk management, supervision of junior doctors, and providing Responsible Clinician duties under the Mental Health Act. The role also involves service development, governance, teaching, and participation in CPD. The job plan comprises 7 PAs (5 DCC, 2 SPA) with ward rounds, CPAs, supervision and academic activity.

The Trust offers strong support structures, including mentoring, wellbeing programmes, study leave, and opportunities for teaching and research. Candidates must hold MRCPsych, GMC registration, Section 12 approval, and experience in perinatal psychiatry.

Main duties of the job

Work with other senior clinical team members to ensure that colleagues understand the professional status and specialty of all team members, their roles and responsibilities in the team.

Work with other senior clinical team members to ensure that all team members have an opportunity to contribute to discussions and that they understand and accept the decisions taken.

Work with other senior clinical team members to ensure that each patient’s care is properly coordinated and managed, and that patients are given information about whom to contact if they have questions or concerns; this is particularly important when patient care is shared between teams.

Work with other senior clinical team members to monitor and regularly review the team’s performance and take steps to correct deficiencies and improve quality.

Work with other senior clinical team members to deal openly and supportively with problems in the conduct, performance or health of team members through Trust procedures..

Participate in business planning for the locality and, as appropriate, contribute to the broader strategic and planning work of the Trust.

To attend and contribute to the quarterly liaison network meeting to share good practice and develop a network of liaison colleague support.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised basic Medical Degree
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register
  • CCT in General Adult Psychiatry (or within 6 months at time of interview) or equivalent
  • Section 12 Approval; Approved Clinician
  • Training or experience in Perinatal Psychiatry
