Job summary

As a Pre-Assessment Staff Nurse, you will:

  • Work as part of a small cohesive team, ensuring safe and seamless Pre assessment patient pathways.

  • Act as the first point of clinical contact, collaborating with multidisciplinary experts to carry out accurate and timely assessments before surgery.

  • Use a broad clinical knowledge base and strong assessment skills to identify patient needs, risks, and optimisation requirements.

  • Provide holistic support to patients and their families, ensuring they feel informed, reassured, and confident throughout the pre-operative journey.

  • Deliver care with compassion, professionalism, and attention to detail, maintaining the highest standards of safety and patient experience.

  • Continue to develop your expertise by working with modern equipment, innovative practices, and advanced clinical facilities.

  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across departments, recognising that continuity and communication are essential to high-quality perioperative care.

Main duties of the job

Daily assessment of patients current and past medical health and previous anaesthetic history to ascertain fitness for proposed procedure or operation. Take an accurate and detailed up to date list of medication and inform patients of any stoppage of medication as per Pre-Assessment guidance. Be able to act on any abnormal history and results.

Work closely with your colleagues. Raise any concerns to senior nurse on duty and or Clinic Anaesthetist. Deliver safe appropriate patient care. Support is available to read ECG’s and blood results.

Qualifications

Essential

  • 1st level Registered Nurse – Diploma or Degree level study

Desirable

  • ECDL or alternative IT qualification

Experience

  • Generic Pre Registration experience

Desirable

  • Experience in a hospital environment

  • Effective interpersonal/ communication skills

Desirable

  • Additional skills & knowledge appropriate to speciality
