Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a candidate interested in a substantive clinical oncology consultant post at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are looking for an enthusiastic clinical oncologist to join our well established, dedicated and supportive team.

The successful candidate will join a team of 13 consultant oncologists supported by three specialty doctors and six clinical oncology trainees (ST3-ST7) to serve a population of 750,000. The department treats the full spectrum of malignant disease including breast, lung, lower and upper GI, haematology, gynaecology, urology, neuro-oncology, skin, and head and neck.

The post will cover breast and one other tumour group. You will be primarily located at Queen’s Hospital, Romford, Essex where the Oncology department is based.

Main duties of the job

To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients requiring oncology services, as outlined in the proposed program which include the following:

Clinical oncology management of breast malignancy

Clinical oncology management of one other small tumour site.

New patient numbers approx. 170-200 per annum. This will be four to five patients per week on a 42-week year.

To work with and support the established multi-disciplinary site-specific teams.

Outpatient chemotherapy and inpatient clinical opinions.

Participate in the out of hours on-call service:

To take an active role in research and clinical trials.

Contribute actively to clinical governance within the department.

To support and develop quality improvement projects within the department.

Flexibility to undertake different appropriate clinical tasks within allocated DCC sessions at the request of the Clinical Lead.

Actively participate in the department’s teaching programme and undertake supervision, teaching and training of medical trainees and other multi-professional staff, in line with guidance from the relevant Royal Colleges or specialty bodies.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration and a license to practice
  • Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or CCT date is within six months of interview
  • Understand and be competent at management of all stages of Oncology to CCST or higher
  • Experience of teaching and training of undergraduates and junior medical staff
  • Involvement in clinical trials
  • Understanding the principles of clinical audit
  • IT skills and computer literacy

Desirable

  • MD, PdD or equivalent
  • Leadership Qualities Management Course
  • Formal training in teaching techniques
  • Published audit / Publications
  • Completed CCST portfolios/appraisal/revalidation
