Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Radiographer to join the Radiology Directorate at Freeman Hospital as a Band 7 Superintendent Radiographer for General X-ray and Mobile Imaging.
As the professional and operational lead for the Plain Film and Mobile Imaging service, you will play a key role in delivering a high-quality, patient-focused diagnostic imaging service within one of the UK’s leading NHS Foundation Trusts. You will provide visible clinical leadership, manage staff and resources, and drive continuous service improvement while maintaining the highest standards of patient care, image quality, safety and governance.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Band 6 Radiographer looking to progress into a leadership role, or an existing Band 7 wishing to further develop their management and strategic skills within a busy tertiary referral centre. The successful candidate will work closely with the Imaging General Manager, Consultant Radiologists and multidisciplinary teams to support service delivery across the Freeman Hospital site while contributing to wider Trust objectives.
The post holder will maintain a clinical presence, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of approximately 280,000 plain film examinations annually, whilst leading on workforce development, quality improvement, equipment management, radiation safety and patient and staff experience.
Main duties of the job
Lead and manage the General X-ray and Mobile Imaging service, ensuring the delivery of a safe, efficient and high-quality diagnostic imaging service for patients and referrers.
Provide professional and clinical leadership to radiographers, assistant practitioners and support staff, promoting excellence in patient care, image quality and service delivery.
Take operational responsibility for staffing, workload management, service performance, waiting lists and resource utilisation across the Plain Film and Mobile Imaging service.
Maintain an active clinical role, undertaking specialist radiographic examinations and supporting complex patient pathways whilst ensuring compliance with IR(ME)R and radiation protection legislation.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
Essential
- HCPC registered, BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent qualification/experience
- MSc or Post Graduate qualification (M level) in the clinical speciality or post graduate specialist short courses or relevant extensive experience, some of which must be in the specialist area at band 6 level
Desirable
- IT qualification e.g. ECDL
- Proven management skills/experience or postgraduate management qualification
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- Knowledge of Trust policies, professional issues and radiation protection regulations (IRM (E) R)
- Extensive knowledge of the guidelines relating to clinical specialist area
- Experience of teaching and training staff
- Evidence of ongoing continuous professional development (CPD)
Desirable
- Previous experience in managing complex radiographic equipment i.e. in scheduling routine service, involved in replacement and procurement
- Experience of acting as a Radiation Protection Supervisor in a busy imaging department
Skills & Abilities
Essential
- Proven leadership and interpersonal/communication skills with evidence of participation in change management and practice development
- IT skills for Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS)
