Looking for a new job for 2026 in a fabulous city? We have an opportunity for a the lead psychologist in community stroke services. This is a permanent 8b role (0.8wte) working across the Community stroke pathway (inpatient rehab unit, community stroke psychology service & community stroke psychology outpatient service). The successful applicant will join the stroke psychology team (qualified, assistants and trainees) & will be an integral part of the wider MDT. This post contributes to the development of stroke psychology locally, regionally and nationally.

As well as delivering a clinical psychology (both therapy and neuropsychology) service to stroke patients & their families, the post-holder supervises psychological professionals and leads on quality improvement initiatives. There may be opportunities for further training e.g. Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology.

As part of the Older Adult and Neurological Conditions (OA&NC) psychology department you will have access to strong psychology support and leadership. The OA&NC department are a group of psychologists working into a range of settings (older adult mental health, dementia, stroke, brain injury, long term neurological conditions), allowing you access to a wealth of experience (CBT accredited supervisors, neuropsychology supervision, EMDR trained psychologists).

Main duties of the job

To provide a qualified specialist clinical psychology service to service users of the community stroke pathway, which includes SPARC rehabilitation wards, Community Stroke Service and Stroke Psychology Outpatient Service

To provide specialist neuropsychological assessment and interventions. To offer highly specialised advice and consultation on service users’ psychological care to psychologist & non-psychologist colleagues alike, and to non-professional (informal) carers. In common with all Clinical Psychologists, to receive regular clinical supervision in accordance with good practice.

To provide clinical supervision to less experienced psychologists, assistant(s), trainee(s) or other professionals. The postholder is responsible for the co-ordination and organisation of the work of other psychologists and other clinical members of the team who provide psychologically informed care and treatment.

Qualifications

Essential

• oRegistration with the HCPC as a Clinical Psychologist
• oFormal training in supervision of other psychologists.

Desirable

• oAdditional qualification in Neuropsychology
• oAdditional, post-qualification short courses.

Knowledge

Essential

• oWell-developed, high-level skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to service users, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
• oSkills in providing highly specialised consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
• oEvidence of significant continuing professional development as required by the HCPC.
• oWell-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies/psychosocial interventions in specific complex groups including stroke and other neurological conditions.
• oEvidence of significant experience working within specialist older adult or physical health services, specifically including stroke services.

Experience

Essential

• oSignificant experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of service users across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in-patient settings. Including experience of working with clients with stroke, other neurological conditions
• oAbility to work with service users presenting with complex psychological difficulties. Ability to work with the potential of individuals or their carers becoming abusive and aggressive
• oSignificant experience of working with a wide variety of service user groups that reflect the full range of clinical severity
• oSignificant evidence of being able to work effectively in multi-disciplinary settings and teams
• oSignificant further training/experience normally through clinical supervision of working as a clinical psychologist
• oExperience of providing teaching and/or training
• oExperience of providing clinical supervision

Desirable

• oExperience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care.
• oExperience of the application of (neuro)psychology in different cultural contexts.
