Principal Public Health Practitioner

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a passionate and dynamic individual to join Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Public Health Team to work collaboratively across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, as a Principal Public Health Practitioner and to drive forward key areas of the Good Food and Movement Framework (2024-2030) and Implementation Plan. In Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan we are taking a whole system approach to Good Food and Movement. To enable good food and movement for all, our approach recognises and is focused on creating systemic change so that together we address the broader influences that shape the food we eat and how we move.

Main duties of the job

This is a strategic role within Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Public Health Team, within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and reporting to its Executive Director for Public Health. The post holder will take a systems leadership approach, build and foster relationships with a wide range of public, private and third sector partners and aligning to both agreed local and national priorities, lead collaborative action towards shared goals. The post holder will contribute to Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Public Health Teams’ aim to reduce health inequalities, as well as improve and protect the health and wellbeing of our local population through focused priorities in the Cardiff and Vale Public Health Team Long Term Plan (2024-2030). There will be active leadership through Public Services Boards (aligned to the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act), and through the established Leadership and Enabling Change arrangements for Good Food and Movement that are in place for both Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

Cardiff and Vale University Local Health Board is situated in the vibrant easily accessible capital of Wales which combines the best of city life, coast and countryside.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this role; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Experience

Essential

• Substantial experience in a senior role in Public Health/Health Promotion Substantial direct experience of working with diverse senior professional and managerial groups across a range of organisations and professional disciplines A track record of representing public health themes in different for Staff management and development experience

Desirable

• Experience of working with the main partner organisations especially local government understanding the environmental and “political” context in which they operate. Quantitative and/or qualitative research Experience of leading/developing and implementing varied Public Health/Health Promotion initiatives

Qualifications

Essential

• Masters or equivalent in Public Health/Health Promotion or allied discipline or equivalent professional qualification or experience. Evidence of continuing professional/personal development Extensive practical and theoretical knowledge of Public Health practice, health promotion models and community development. Understanding of determinants of health and health inequalities

Desirable

• Achieved or working towards registration as a Public Health Practitioner on the UKPHR Up to date knowledge of developments in Welsh Government health-related strategies Knowledge of the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act and its implementation Awareness of sources of relevant data/information
