An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant in General Paediatrics with a Special Interest in Respiratory Medicine.

The successful candidate will provide consultant-led care across acute, inpatient and ambulatory paediatric services and participate in the paediatric on-call rota. They will support the development and delivery of specialist respiratory services, providing high-quality care in line with national standards.

The post holder will have expertise in managing paediatric respiratory conditions, including asthma, recurrent wheeze, chronic cough, bronchiectasis and sleep-disordered breathing. Working within a multidisciplinary team, they will collaborate with specialist nurses, allied health professionals, primary care and tertiary centres to deliver integrated care and improve patient outcomes.

The role includes service development, clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and teaching responsibilities, contributing to the ongoing enhancement and sustainability of respiratory services.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work as part of a team of 10 acute paediatric consultants, with a rota which will become 1 in 10 once recruitment is complete. There is a hot week system in which the consultant of the week is on call for general paediatrics and clinics are cancelled for that week. During the on call week the consultant attends daily handovers, carries out ward rounds and attends emergencies when required in ED, PAU or the ward. They are also expected to carry out safeguarding medicals at the request of police or social services and write reports.

There will be outpatient clinics in Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District Hospital. These clinics include new and follow up general paediatrics and specialty clinics. There is small proportion of resident on calls for the post-holder, which are outlined in the job plan. The resident shifts will be 5 weekday evening shifts over a 10 week period and this is equitably shared by all the acute paediatric consultants. The resident shift is to cover the Paediatric Assessment Unit along with Junior and Middle grade doctors. This will enable presence of Consultant in Paediatric assessment unit at the busiest time of the day.This post does not include any neonatal cover.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Substantive posts – Must be entered on the Specialist Register (or entry within 6 months)
  • MRCPCH
  • Completed CCT in Paediatrics
  • Note: CESR applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application
  • Evidence of training and experience in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine.

Desirable

  • A higher qualification, e.g. MD PhD Diploma Masters

Experience

Essential

  • More than five years of experience working at middle grade level in general paediatrics
  • Valid APLS and NLS
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
  • Meets the requirements of the GMC’s ‘Good Medical Practice

Desirable

  • Experience in teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates .
  • Experience in paediatric asthma services.
  • Experience developing respiratory pathways.
  • Involvement in respiratory research, audit or quality improvement.
