Job summary

The post offers a valuable opportunity for a motivated individual to step into a key leadership role within the Haematology & Blood Transfusion Quality team, supporting the continued implementation of ISO 15189:2022 standard and maintaining compliance with UKAS and other regulatory frameworks.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Haematology & BT Quality & Governance Manager, Quality Officers, and Laboratory Managers across the division.

Haematology & Blood Transfusion sit within Blood Sciences which is a busy, multi-site service with a strong culture of continual quality improvement, professional collaboration, and regulatory excellence. Our quality management system is underpinned by ISO 15189:2022 and delivered through collaborative input from the quality team and operational teams of Blood Sciences.

We are committed to robust audit cycles, timely non-conformity management, and data-driven monitoring of key quality indicators. This role plays a vital part in ensuring patient safety and service enhancement across the network.

Main duties of the job

  • To be a key member of the Pathology Quality Team.
  • To maintain the Haematology & Blood Transfusion Quality management system as directed by the Quality and Governance managers
  • To deputise for the Quality and Governance manager as required
  • To train and assist the laboratory teams to perform / document audits against defined national quality performance measures;
  • To assist in the development and completion of quality improvement action plans.
  • To investigate and assist the investigation of incidents, non-conformities and complaints to enable the department to respond appropriately

Person Specification

Education

Essential

  • HCPC Registration
  • MSc, FIBMS or equivalent in relevant discipline
  • Demonstrable relevant experience post HCPC registration

Desirable

  • Qualifications in Quality Management
  • Management training

Skills/abilities

Essential

  • Practical analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory work.
  • Competence in PC word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
  • Prepared to work with biological materials.
  • Quick to learn and comprehend.

Desirable

  • Up to date knowledge of NHS issues.

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of participation/use of Quality Management systems
  • Knowledge of Pathology accreditation and governance requirements
  • Experience of dealing with conflict and difficult situations
  • Accurate data entry

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a large busy pathology laboratory
  • Experience managing change
  • Experience of accreditation procedures and standards (e.g. UKAS, EFI, GLP)
