Job summary

The post holder will support the management of ward/unit and will deputise for the Ward/Unit Manager as required. S/he will carry out allocated duties at the direction of the Ward/Unit Manager and provide clinical supervision and support to an identified staff group. S/he will regularly take charge of the ward and manage the team in the absence of the Ward Manager. The post holder will work within a multi-disciplinary team framework in the delivery of care to patients within the intensive care setting.

S/he will act as a primary/associate nurse for a group of patients, assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating care. As a primary/associate nurse the post holder will promote person-centred care and ensure that all care plans reflect this approach. S/he will also be expected to teach and supervise others including newly qualified and unqualified staff

Main duties of the job

  1. Manages the ward on a day-to-day basis at the direction of the WardManager and deputises in the Ward Manager’s absence
  2. Co-operates with the Ward Manager to ensure that junior staff participate in professional development programmes and are supervised appropriately within their remit of competency.
  3. Ensures the confidentiality of their work as outlined in the Trust’s policy, the Data Protection Act and NMC guidelines on professional conduct.
  4. Ensures that junior staff understands the Trust’s policies regarding Health & Safety at Work.
  5. Maintains an effective working knowledge of the Mental Health Act (1983) and other related legal and statutory frameworks and subsequentrevisions.
  6. Understands, carries out and educates others in the administrative requirements of the Mental Health Act 1983.
  7. To participate in the duty nurse bleep holding rota.
  8. When completing staff rotas adopt the most effective use of the Health Roster staff rota system as instructed by the Ward/Unit Manager.
  9. To support the Ward Manager in ensuring that KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) relating to ward efficiencies are maintained and when required initiate actions to address any shortfalls.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Essential

  • RMN or equivalent with post registration experience at staff nurse level in an acute setting
  • Evidence of relevant ongoing professional development
  • Training in managing violence and aggression including Control and Restraint Training if appropriate to service area including evidence of attendance at updates.

Desirable

  • Has an understanding of the physical health needs of people with serious mental illness.
  • Experience in teaching and supporting junior staff members.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of de-escalation skills and wo proactively to reduce the risk of violence
  • Has a detailed knowledge of the MHA, the mental capacity act, CPA and other relevant legislation such as Heal and Safety.

Skills and ability

  • Good knowledge of a participation in therapeutic group work
  • Expert knowledge and experience of care planning within the Primary Nursing system
  • Has a detailed knowledge of the MHA, the mental capacity act, CPA and other relevant legislation such as Heal and Safety.

Desirable

  • Has an understanding of the physical health needs of people with serious mental illness.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates an ability to manage and motivate staff at all levels
