Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a motivated Clinical Fellow (ST1/2 level) in Stroke Medicine to join the Stroke Team at Musgrove Park Hospital. This post offers excellent clinical exposure and training opportunities in hyperacute, acute and rehabilitation stroke care within a supportive consultant-led environment. Part-time applications will also be considered.

The role is ideally suited to doctors who have completed Foundation Training (or equivalent) and are looking to gain valuable experience in Stroke Medicine, Neurology, Geriatric Medicine or Internal Medicine.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

  • Support the Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) and Acute Stroke Unit.
  • Assess and clerk acute stroke admissions.
  • Participate in consultant ward rounds and undertake supervised ward rounds.
  • Gain experience in stroke assessment, stroke mimics and reperfusion therapies.
  • Develop skills in interpreting CT brain, CT angiography, CT perfusion and MRI imaging.
  • Request and interpret investigations.
  • Perform clinical procedures appropriate to experience and competence.
  • Liaise effectively with patients, relatives and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Prepare discharge documentation and coordinate patient care

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
  • Completion of Foundation Training or equivalent.
  • Minimum one year NHS experience in a paid clinical role.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and deliver safe patient care.
  • Basic understanding of stroke medicine and common medical conditions.
  • Immediate Life Support (ILS) certification or equivalent

Desirable

  • MRCP Part 1.
  • Experience in Stroke Medicine.
  • Teaching experience.
  • ALS certification.
  • Research, audit or quality improvement experience.
  • Publications or presentations.
  • Higher degree or teaching qualification.
