Main duties of the job

It is an exciting time to be working at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, as we have recently increased our theatre space to 6 theatres and an Interventional MRI theatre. The National Hospital offers excellent experience in a unit with good clinical outcomes and high patient and staff satisfaction levels. The unit provides a full range of neurosurgical and spinal procedures with wide range of sub-specialist Neurosurgical interests such as Hydrocephalus, Pituitary, Epilepsy, Complex Spinal, Neuro-Oncology, Neuro-vascular and Functional Neurosurgery

The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary surgical and medical team and will be responsible for the pre and peri operative management of our patients. You will also participate in outpatient clinics. You will have a dedicated consultant clinical supervisor and weekly teaching.We would welcome applications from any candidate whose career progression would be helped by a longer period of neurosurgical surgical experience at registrar level and by candidates with previous neurosurgical registrar level experience.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

• Evidence of achievement of Foundation competences from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
• Evidence of achievement of CT/ST1 competences in medicine at time of application & CT/ST2 competences in medicine (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Medical training) by the commencement of the ST3 training post (August 2013 or later), supported by evidence from work-based assessments of clinical performance (DOPS, Mini-CEX, CBD, ACAT) and Muti-Source Feedback or equivalent, ARCP or equivalent
• Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current license to practice
• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• MRCS(UK) full diploma or equivalent at time of appointment
• Not previously relinquished, released or removed from a training programme in this specialty unless under exceptional circumstances

Desirable

• Intercalated BSc or equivalent
• Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD (where research thesis not part of first medical degree)

Experience

Essential

• Evidence of experience in General Neurosurgery
• Evidence of some competences in the specialty as defined by the relevant curricula
• Awareness of the basics of managing neurosurgical pathways
• Evidence of skills in the management of acute medical emergencies (e.g. ALERT, IMPACT certification)
• Able to demonstrate proficiency in a range of medical procedures as an indication of manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
• Evidence of competence in management of medical emergencies and in-patients through continuous work-based assessments, portfolio evidence, including logbook documentation if applicable

Desirable

• Demonstrate current ALS certification or equivalent
