Job summary
An exciting opportunity has come up for a compassionate and enthusiastic Registered Mental Health Nurse to join our Acute Assessment and Acute Medical Unit teams as a Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse – Mental Health.
You will play a key role in improving the care and experience of patients with mental health needs within a busy acute hospital environment. Using a trauma-informed approach, you will build therapeutic relationships, complete mental health and risk assessments, support safe care planning and provide guidance to ward teams.
Working collaboratively with Psychiatric Liaison and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will help manage complex clinical situations while maintaining patients’ dignity, safety, independence and choice.

Main duties of the job
Provide specialist mental health nursing care and support to patients within the Acute Assessment Unit.Undertake mental state examinations, psychosocial assessments and risk assessments, ensuring clear and timely documentation.Develop and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients, delivering compassionate, trauma-informed care that promotes dignity, independence and choice.Implement and monitor mental health risk management plans, escalating concerns and liaising with Psychiatric Liaison and multidisciplinary teams as required.Provide expert advice and guidance to ward teams on mental health care, risk management, the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.Utilise advanced communication, diversion and de-escalation skills to manage challenging situations and maintain a safe clinical environment.Work autonomously while collaborating effectively with medical, nursing, allied health professionals and external mental health services.Support the delivery of safe and effective patient care, including observation, physical health monitoring, medication administration and patient escorts where required.Deliver education, support and coaching to ward staff to enhance confidence and competence in caring for patients with mental health needs.Act as a professional role model, demonstrating leadership, clinical expertise and the Trust’s PROUD values at all times.

Essential
- Registered Mental Nurse on the NMC Register
- Post graduate qualifications Mental Health, or equivalent in experience
- Post qualifying experience in Acute Mental Health setting
- Substantial previous experience of working in an NHS setting
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Must be an effective team player.
- Able to demonstrate excellent clinical skills in Risk Assessment
- Excellent knowledge of all relevant legislation in relation to Mental Health and mental Capacity
- Excellent time management skills.
- Possess ability to work on own and as part of a team.
- Able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to the management of suicidal individuals.
- Able to work effectively and flexibly as a member of a team.
- Able to use initiative and demonstrate a proactive approach.
- Able to work flexibly.
- Must be able to reliable, calm and have an approachable manner.
- Proactive about own personal development in line with KSF Post requirements.

Desirable
- Completed approved Prevention and management of Violence and Aggression course.
- Registered General Adult Nurse on the NMC Register
- Previous experience in a Psychiatric liaison or Crisis resolution team role.
- Previous experience working in a General Hospital setting
- Knowledge of co-morbid physical illness’s in relation to Mental Health patients
