This post is one of the existing posts which provide middle grade cover to the general paediatric, neonatal and outpatient clinics under supervision of the consultants.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric Registrar will work as a senior member of the multidisciplinary team, providing high-quality, safe and compassionate care to neonates, infants, children and young people. The postholder will work under consultant supervision while providing clinical leadership, supervision and support to junior medical staff.

The on call commitment is shared with the other middle grade staff. The rota does include prospective cover for annual leave and study leave.

There are a minimum of two middle grade doctors on shift daytime until 9pm and three overnight 9pm-9am. Doctors are allocated an area of primary responsibility but will be expected to move across all paediatric areas as required. The above mentioned programme has to be read in conjunction with the proposed work programme. Obviously it may need to be varied to meet the needs of the service and to maintain patient care.

Person Specification

Qualification

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • GMC registration
  • Medical defence membership

Desirable

  • MRCPCH or equivalent RCPCH approved qualification
  • APLS, NLS.

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 24 months experience in paediatrics & neonates

Desirable

  • 6 months Level 3 neonatal experience in U.K or in equivalent unit

Skills

Essential

  • Neonatal procedures like Intubation, vascular access skills etc

Knowledge

Essential

  • Appropriate to middle grade level, ability to manage emergencies

Communication

Essential

  • Ability to communicate effectively & clearly

Clinical governance

Essential

  • Experience of active involvement in audit

Desirable

  • Understanding audit, risk management procedures

Teaching

Essential

  • Evidence of contribution to teaching

Desirable

  • Teaching achievement (attendance at teaching courses etc)
