Join one of the UK’s leading cardiac surgery centres. University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) is seeking a Locum Consultant Cardiac & Retrieval Surgeon to support our internationally recognised adult cardiac surgery service and nationally commissioned heart and lung transplant programme.

Based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, the successful candidate will provide elective and emergency adult cardiac surgery, including participation in the on-call rota for cardiac surgical emergencies, cardiothoracic trauma, organ retrieval, transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. The role includes operating, outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary working, teaching, audit and quality improvement activities.

Applicants must be GMC registered (or eligible), included on the Specialist Register for Cardiothoracic Surgery, or within six months of eligibility. Candidates should demonstrate independent competence in adult cardiac surgery, experience of retrieval services and machine perfusion, strong leadership and communication skills, and a commitment to education, audit and service improvement.

Main duties of the job

The Locum Consultant Cardiac & Retrieval Surgeon will provide high-quality care for elective and emergency adult cardiac surgery patients, working independently within a multidisciplinary team. Core responsibilities include undertaking cardiac surgical procedures, participating in the on-call rota for cardiac surgical emergencies, cardiothoracic trauma, cardiopulmonary retrieval, transplantation and mechanical circulatory support services, and contributing to outpatient clinics and multidisciplinary meetings.

The post holder will support delivery of the Trust’s regional and national cardiac surgery services, ensuring excellent clinical outcomes, patient safety and compliance with quality standards. Daily expectations include operating, ward rounds, clinical decision-making, patient reviews, participation in MDT discussions, and collaboration with surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, nurses and allied health professionals.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, training and supervision of resident doctors and other healthcare professionals, while actively participating in audit, quality improvement, research and service development initiatives. They will support a culture of continuous improvement and help deliver efficient, patient-centred services.
