We are seeking an experienced and motivatedBiomedical Scientist or Registered Nurse to join our team as a Specialist Practitioner of Transfusion (SPOT).

The successful candidate will promote safe and effective transfusion practice across the Trust, delivering education and training to clinical staff, supporting compliance with BSQR, SABRE and SHOT requirements, and acting as the key link between the Blood Transfusion Department and clinical teams.

Key responsibilities include investigating transfusion incidents, managing traceability, developing transfusion policies, supporting quality improvement initiatives, and representing the Trust at regional and national transfusion meetings.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Band 7 practitioner, or an experienced Band 6 looking to develop their specialist transfusion expertise, within a dedicated team committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.

Main duties of the job

Reporting into the Lead Nurse for Haematology and Oncology, some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver education and training to clinical staff on best transfusion practice.
  • Act as a specialist resource for transfusion-related advice and support.
  • Investigate transfusion incidents and support learning and quality improvement.
  • Monitor and manage transfusion traceability requirements.
  • Develop, implement and review transfusion-related policies and procedures.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Significant post registration experience in a relevant setting
  • Experience of senior healthcare roles, leading teams and ensuring adherence to best practices in patient care.
  • Experience designing and delivering healthcare training programmes, including simulation exercises and competency based education.
  • Experience conducting audits, evaluating training effectiveness, and reporting findings to drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration with extensive transfusion knowledge and current NMC registration or relevant professional body
  • Educated to master’s level or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through a combination of in-depth experience, post- graduate or post registration study and/or courses

Desirable

  • Recognised leadership/mentoring/coaching course
  • SPOT experience

Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • Comprehensive understanding of current best practice in transfusion therapy
  • Understanding of healthcare governance frameworks and experience in developing and implementing policies for emergency preparedness and response.
  • Ability to identify training gaps and deliver evidence-based education to both clinical and non-clinical colleagues.
  • Ability to provide pastoral support, adapting as necessary
  • Self-motivated and able to work under own initiative and prioritise workload
  • The ability to communicate with a range of different people within the organisation and present information in a way that is easy to understand to effectively engage with people
  • Able to manage complexity and work in an ambiguous or changing environment
  • IT literate including sound knowledge of MS Office software such as; Excel, PowerPoint etc

Desirable

  • Experience of investigating clinical incidents and near misses associated with transfusion practice.
  • Experience of identifying and managing clinical risks associated with transfusion practice
