CONSULTANT IN RESPIRATORY MEDICINE –SEVERE ASTHMA

(5 PAs GSTT Severe Asthma Service / 5 PAs Clinical Research)

This appointment is for a clinical academic position at consultant level who will work 5 PAs as a substantively employed NHS consultant physician within the GSTT Severe Asthma Service (based predominantly at RBH site) and 5 PAs in clinical research relating to asthma funded through a National Heart and Lung Foundation (NHLF) Fellowship Award. This award has a fixed term of 5 years. It is expected that the successful applicant will generate ongoing research funding through competitive research grants beyond this time or return to full-time clinical work. Prior to the merger, Guy’s and Royal Brompton each hosted the two largest asthma services in the UK. The newly formed cross-site GSTT service is the largest of its kind in the world with an international reputation for excellence and over three thousand patients on biologic therapies for asthma and related eosinophilic lung diseases. Alongside the biologic service is an equally important and well-respected service providing highly specialist assessment and management of patients with upper and large airway abnormalities as well as complex breathlessness. The appointee will work across these two aligned areas joining a team of a consultants based at RBH and Guy’s as well as an experienced multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

The post is full time, with a provisional job plan outlined in section 10 It is expected that the appointee will have already gained experience and expertise in severe asthma care and the management of patients on biologic therapy from working in a severe asthma service at registrar and/or consultant level. The appointee will also support the cough and upper airway service and previous experience in this area is desirable but not essential. The appointee will be expected to have obtained a MD/PhD research degree and have published widely in the field of asthma. Active engagement in clinical research studies including supporting the recruitment of patients to commercial and non-commercial clinical trials beyond the applicants own personal projects is expected. A desire to participate in teaching, clinical audit, and quality improvement projects with the aim of continually looking to improve standards of care in the department once appointed is importantTo participate in and develop clinical and organisational audit and to improve standards of the service wherever possible.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

• Eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practise
• MRCP or equivalent
• CCT in respiratory medicine

Desirable

• Higher degree (PhD or MD) in the field of asthma

Clinical Experience

Essential

• Clinical experience in severe asthma including the use of biologic therapies

Desirable

• Specialist training at an NHSE commissioned Severe Asthma Centre
• Clinical experience of managing cough and upper airway dysfunction
• Clinical experience of managing eosinophilic lung diseases

Clinical Skills / knowledge and abilities

Essential

• Peer reviewed publications in the field of asthma
• Undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching experience
• Experience of clinical audit
• Experience of supporting recruitment to clinical trials and /or clinical research

Desirable

• Presentations at National and/or International Respiratory Congresses
