You are warmly invited to apply for the post of consultant anaesthetist with an interest in Vascular Anaesthesia. The successful candidates will have a broad-based training in anaesthesia and will have the ability to care for complex patients having major surgeries. The role involves a commitment to supporting the out of hours emergency anaesthesia services at University Hospital.

University Hospital is a large teaching hospital and is the Major Trauma centre for the Central England Trauma Network. We have a large Department of Anaesthesia which delivers perioperative care to around 44,000 elective and emergency patients, and obstetric care to around 6,000 parturients. We provide anaesthesia and perioperative care for all major sub-specialties including cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, vascular surgery and renal transplant services.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide and further develop anaesthesia, pain and critical care services for the Trust in collaboration with colleagues in all disciplines including primary and tertiary care to provide an integrated and high quality service for patients. This will include ensuring that all services are provided in an effective and efficient manner and that the principles of risk management and clinical governance are maintained at all times.
  • Actively participate in the teaching and training of junior doctors and allied healthcare professionals in anaesthesia and critical care.
  • Take part in the general activities of consultants at the Trust – teaching, clinical governance, administration, management etc. This will be done by personal development into appropriate roles depending on the consultants’ particular interests and aptitudes.
  • Support and develop innovative improvements within the department and the Trust in order to maintain and improve the quality of patient care.

Training (abilities/skills) and Experience

Essential

  • Advanced training (or equivalent) in Vascular Anaesthesia. ? Broad general anaesthetic training to UK CCT level or equivalent ? Ability to do eye blocks (or willingness to learn) ? ALS (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Experience managing high risk cases in a broad range of surgical specialties. ? APLS/EPLS (or equivalent) ? ATLS/ATACC (or equivalent) ? Experience of working in the NHS

Teaching/ Educational Experience

Essential

  • Basic teaching course – College or Deanery. ? Experience in demonstrating clinical procedures and techniques to other health care professionals. ? Evidence of an ability to organise and participate in teaching and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students.

Desirable

  • ATLS, ALS, APLS or PALS instructor status. ? Postgraduate qualification in teaching/education.

Clinical Governance

  • Understanding of clinical governance processes ? Thorough understanding of the principles of clinical audit ? Evidence of recent involvement in quality improvement or audit ? Interest and awareness of research methodology ? Able to apply research outcomes to clinical practice
