Job Overview

We are strengthening our senior medical leadership structure and are seeking exceptional senior medical leaders to join us as Deputy Chief Medical Officers for:

Working directly with Professor Derek Tracy, Chief Medical Officer, and alongside the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for People, these newly established roles offer an exciting opportunity to shape the future of care across South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Chief Medical Officers will provide visible, inclusive, and clinically credible leadership across the Trust, helping to improve the quality, safety, effectiveness and timeliness of care for patients and service users. These influential roles will work across clinical, operational, and corporate boundaries, supporting organisational strategy, service transformation, and continuous improvement.

Successful candidates will join a strengthened senior medical leadership team and play a key role in delivering the Trust’s ambitions for outstanding care, innovation, research and clinical excellence.

Each role comprises six management programmed activities (PAs) and forms part of a newly strengthened medical leadership structure.

Person Specification

Education and Qualification

Essential

  • Medical Degree with Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • Substantive Consultant appointment, or eligibility for appointment to a substantive Consultant role within the Trust.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development, appraisal and revalidation.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in leadership, management, quality improvement
  • Fellowship or membership of relevant professional or leadership body (e.g. FMLM).

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Significant senior clinical leadership experience at Directorate, Divisional or Trust level.
  • Experience of working with or advising senior leadership teams, including Executive or Board-level committees
  • Experience of influencing and leading across organisational boundaries, including clinical and operational teams.
  • Ability to maintain clinical credibility through ongoing clinical practice within an agreed Consultant role.

Desirable

  • Experience of working at system level for example within an Integrated Care System or through partnership working across organisations.
  • Experience of leading or contributing to academic, research, or innovation programmes.

Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Strong strategic thinking and ability to translate strategy into delivery.
  • Ability to analyse, interpret and use complex data and intelligence to drive improvement.
  • Advanced communication, influencing, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to lead and motivate multidisciplinary teams across organisational boundaries.
  • Demonstrable credibility as a senior clinical leader, with the ability to influence senior clinicians and stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Understanding of quality improvement methodologies, operational improvement approaches and organisational learning systems.
  • Knowledge of NHS policy, regulatory frameworks (e.g. CQC), access standards and national mental health priorities.
  • Understanding of population health approaches and health inequalities.

Role/Team specific requirements

Essential

  • Able to work as part of a cohesive DCMO leadership team across Safe, Effective and Timely Care.
  • Able to build effective working relationships with Clinical Directors, Service Directors and senior multidisciplinary leaders across the Trust.
  • Able to work flexibly across portfolios, providing cross-cover and support to other Deputy Chief Medical Officers as required.
  • Able to contribute to Trust-wide initiatives, major programmes and organisational priorities as directed by the Chief Medical Officer.
