Swansea Bay University Health Board
Job summary
This post will be joining a compliment of 34 Consultant Radiologists responsible for the provision of Radiological services to Swansea (in Morriston, Singleton and Neath Port Talbot Hospitals) with close links toSwansea Medical School, National Imaging academy of Wales and the Institute of life sciences at Swansea University bringing plenty of opportunity for teaching and research.
This is a new post joining 3 existing head and neck radiologists. Swansea is the tertiary oncology centre, incorporating the South West Wales head and neck cancer service, generating large volumes of challenging and interesting work from 2 large adjoining health boards, working alongside specialist surgeons from ENT and maxillofacial surgery, as well as the Welsh Centre for burns and plastics. To facilitate this service WHSCC fund a mobile PET van on site in Singleton.
There is also a newly established weekly rapid diagnostic centre for potential malignant neck lumps referred from primary care and based at Neath Port Talbot Hospital, led by consultant radiologists with the support of specialist nurses and a head and neck sonographer, with instant access to cross sectional imaging.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the general on-call rota for Swansea, which is currently on a 1 in 17 basis, covering inpatient scanning at Morriston. They will also be taking part in a ‘hot-reporting’ rota covering urgent in-patient CT reporting.
The successful applicant will attend head and neck MDTs on a rota. Head and neck interventional skills are essential.
Access to ultrasound, fluoroscopy and CT Imaging guidance is available across all three sites.
The Health Board has committed to enhancing Radiology provision on weekends. Currently, a ‘predictable on-call session’, i.e. a resident session, is offered each weekend day between 11pm and 3 pm in exchange for time back in lieu. This may change depending on the needs of the department.
Home Tele-Radiology is accessible via a laptop with VPN access, enabling MPR capabilities. Currently, there are 13 trainees on rotation in Swansea, which has facilitated a night shift of ST2-ST5 personnel covering on-call requests and reporting. Outsourcing is utilised for reporting CT body and MR spine when an ST2 is on-call overnight. A home working solution is provided where available.
There is a separate on-call rota for neuroradiology (currently 1:5/1:6) that covers MRI and provides support to the general radiologists who handle CT brain cases out of hours (with registrars).
