Job summary
This job provides the opportunity to be involved in medical educational teaching in an Ophthalmology setting. It also provides exposure and continued clinical experience in Ophthalmology acute and specialist setting including one theatre session per week.
It is an exceptional opportunity to build your CV, enhance your teaching experience and undertake a higher degree, via the Master’s in Medical Education program. It also supports the teaching fellow to present at local, regional, national conferences and research innovative ideas in medical education.
The Department fully supports all Clinical Teaching Fellows in developing the course and UMED also has its own annual Undergraduate Medical Education Conference, where best and innovative practice can be shared.
Main duties of the job
Providing clinical duties in our ophthalmology department and teaching duties to our medical students.
You will be based at the Royal Derby Hospital and will be working alongside other Clinical Teaching Fellows in other specialties and will be able to work together on projects and share good practice.

Qualifications & Eligibility
Essential
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practice at time of application
- MBBS/ MBChB or equivalent
- Life Support Qualifications BLS/ALS
Desirable
- Postgraduate Teaching Qualification
- Additional higher/medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty
Clinical Knowledge & Skills
Essential
- Minimum of 2 years Foundation Training (or equivalent in ophthalmology)
- Up to date clinical knowledge in relevant specialty & evidence of an understanding of its application
Desirable
- Distinction, prizes or honours during post graduate training
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Teaching
Essential
- Evidence & experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
- Ability to & experience of teaching clinical skills
Desirable
- Any teaching courses or qualifications
Audit/Research Experience
Essential
- Evidence of active participation in audit
- Evidence and ability to assess & apply evidence-based research into every day clinical practice
- Evidence of interest & experience in undergraduate & postgraduate teaching.
