Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Operating Systems Engineer to join the award-winning Development Team at Newcastle Hospitals.The team designs, develops and supports enterprise-level software applications used across one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country. These systems support clinical decision-making, operational processes and the wider business needs of the Trust.This challenging post will require the post holder to maintain internally developed interfaces and purchased interface software packages, to determine and resolve problems occurring in interfaces and act as a technical liaison to users/vendors.
The post holder will be required to assume responsibility as part of an on-call rota to provide 24/7 integration support.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join the Digital and Technology Services Interface Development team, supporting the delivery of agreed Trust digital projects while helping to maintain safe and reliable live services.
The role will involve developing, testing, deploying and supporting software used across the Trust, working closely with colleagues in development, application support, service delivery and clinical/business teams.
The post holder will need strong technical problem-solving skills, good communication, and the ability to balance project work with operational support. They will be expected to investigate issues, contribute to improvements, support system changes, and help ensure that services remain resilient, secure and fit for purpose.

Qualifications & Education
Essential
- Possess a degree including courses in system integration or systems analysis OR has acquired core interfacing skills and knowledge via extensive practical experience
Desirable
- MIRTH Connect certified
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- Have experience of interface development and support: o Interfacing frameworks such as HL7, FHIR, XML, JSON, etc. JavaScript development. o Interface design and documentation. o Interface testing. Troubleshooting of errors and issue resolution
Desirable
- Have experience of interface development and support: Interfacing frameworks such as HL7, FHIR, XML, JSON, etc. JavaScript development. Interface design and documentation. o Interface testing. oTroubleshooting of errors and issue resolution
- Experience with MIRTH appliance administration
- Experience of using Linux
- Experience of Cerner Millennium

- Have the ability to converse fluently, logically and confidently with a wide range of levels of staff
- Have effective organisational and coordination skills, combined with ability to work to deadlines under pressure
- Have analytical skills including the ability to handle numerical data and statistics
- Have experience in project management techniques, ideally holding a recognised project management qualification
