Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated colleague with a specialist interest in gastrointestinal radiology to join our team of 46 consultants. We are a dynamic and innovative department, and the applicant will be expected to provide acute and sub speciality imaging and have a strong interest in teaching. Portsmouth Hospital University NHS trust is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, providing acute and specialist services to a population of greater than 675,000 people. Portsmouth is part of the East branch of the Wessex specialist registrars training scheme, providing training to 20 specialist registrars. Portsmouth University NHS Trust is in partnership with the Isle of Wight and hosts the new Portsmouth Medical School.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

  • Subspecialty interest in gastrointestinal radiology, to participate in all aspects of subspecialty gastrointestinal imaging, image guided intervention and gastrointestinal multi-disciplinary meetings.
  • General work
      • Acute in-patient cross sectional imaging
      • On-call service. Currently 1:16
      • Supported by local Trainees until 22:00hrs
      • Outsourced CT 22:00hrs to 0900hrs
      • Weekend on call working is in and working for between 8-10 hrs,
  • Provide training for the East wing of the Wessex Radiology Training Scheme Specialty Trainees.
  • The job comprises 8 direct clinical care (DCC) and 2 supporting programme activities (SPA). One of the SPA sessions can be taken off site and home work stations and working from home is available. We are happy to support flexible working (e.g. compressed job plan, four day working etc).

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice, Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights, Fellowship of Royal College of Radiologists, or equivalent, Subspecialty experience in gastrointestinal imaging.

Desirable

  • Management course or experience, Fellowship level training in gastrointestinal imaging and intervention, Flexibility in progressing skills in other areas of GI radiology.

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable, significant and ongoing experience in GI radiology with evidence of significant subspecialist training, including competence of GI focused ultrasound (including bowel), MRI, CT, and fluoroscopy (including complex post-surgical bariatric patients), Ability to undertake difficult abdominal biopsy and drains, General Diagnostic Radiology skills to support local requirements for acute general radiology service weekday time and on call/ in and working at weekend, Understanding of clinical risk management.

Desirable

  • Fellowship level training in GI imaging and intervention or EUS, Training and experience in teaching of medical, radiographic and nursing staff.

  • Evidence of participation in audit, Good oral and written communication skills, Publications, Prizes and honours, Logical thinking, problem solving and decision making, Demonstrable experience and ability in teaching, both formally and informally.

Desirable

  • Appropriate and relevant publications in peer reviewed journals; presentations at national or international meetings, Evidence of clinical research training and significant involvement in research projects, Advanced computer skills, Knowledge of the principles of service redesign.
