Specialist Midwife – West Midlands Regional Placenta Accreta Spectrum

This exciting new role has been created to provide strategic and clinical leadership as the Specialist Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS) Midwife for the West Midlands Perinatal Network (WMPN). The role will focus on developing, strengthening, and coordinating the regional PAS network, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary PAS teams across the four regional referral centres to ensure equitable, high-quality care delivery.

The postholder will provide expert midwifery support to women diagnosed with PAS, ensuring a consistent, evidence-based, and holistic approach throughout the care pathway.

Given the well-recognised psychological morbidity associated with PAS, including increased rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and long-term physical complications, dedicated specialist midwifery leadership is essential.

The postholder will have a special interest in psychological support and incorporate this into the direct care provided to patients. The candidate will also be passionate in providing continuity of care for women with complex obstetric needs and be an advocate throughout their journey.

Main duties of the job

• The postholder will provide direct clinical care to women with a suspected diagnosis of PAS across all four designated PAS centres.
• Acting as a patient advocate and champion, the postholder will ensure that the patient voice remains central to all clinical network activities, embedding person-centred principles within the networked model of care and associated clinical pathways.
• The postholder must demonstrate strategic thinking and the ability to plan, coordinate, and deliver a complex programme of work spanning multiple providers, commissioners, and patient groups.
• They will possess the professional credibility, expertise, and interpersonal skills necessary to unite diverse stakeholders, manage differing perspectives, and, where required, act as an impartial facilitator to reconcile competing priorities.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Registered Midwife
• Relevant post-registration qualification
• Degree Level Qualification or equivalent experience
• Master’s Degree in a healthcare related subject (or demonstrable evidence of working at Masters Level).
• Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

• Clinical Leadership or Management Qualification
• Teaching and Assessing Qualification

Knowledge & Nature Of Experience

Essential

• Working knowledge of operational midwifery leadership within fields including Complex caesarean sections or Placenta Accreta Spectrum
• Sound knowledge and experience in managing the care of maternity surgical patients or PAS
• Sound knowledge and experience managing the care of a critically ill patient requiring stabilisation or escalation of care
• Knowledge and understanding of current professional midwifery policy and practice issues
• Knowledge & experience of Safeguarding Adults & Children
• Knowledge & Understanding of Infection Control
• Proven change management skills
• Knowledge, understanding and experience in Risk Management and Governance issues.
• Knowledge & understanding of Patient/Public Involvement, management
• Knowledge of NHS Directives and policy initiatives.
• Understanding of Local and National policy drivers
