CONSULTANT IN GENERAL ANAESTHESIA AND CHRONIC PAIN MANAGEMENT

Applications are invited for a Consultant Anaesthetist to join a rapidly expanding anaesthetic department working across the University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough sites in Cardiff.

Sessions are available in a variety of surgical disciplines including General, Vascular, Neuro, Urology, Orthopaedics, ENT, Head & Neck, Ophthalmology, Trauma, Breast, Thrombectomy and Gynaecological Surgery.

Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University’s Wales College of Medicine will be expected. The Anaesthetic Department has a very active ongoing academic research programme.

Cardiff and Vale Health Board is one of the largest in the UK and is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should be fully registered with the GMC and ideally have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Anaesthetics or be within 6 months of award of a CCT at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The salary range for this post is £114, 099 to £ £166,585 per annum.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have a primary role within the Chronic Pain Service alongside the wider general anaesthetic work of the Department. They will provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues where practical, ensuring continuity of service and effective utilisation of the consultant workforce in accordance with the agreed job plan.

Sessions are available in a variety of surgical disciplines including Vascular Surgery, Neuroradiology, Orthopaedics, ENT, Head & Neck Surgery, Ophthalmology, Trauma, Major Trauma, General and Gynaecological Surgery.

Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University’s School of Medicine will be expected.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • On Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT / CESR(CP) due within six months of interview date

Desirable

  • FFPMRCA or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • Broad training and experience in Anaesthetics with further experience in pain medicine
  • Must have evidence of completion or expected completion of advanced training in Pain Medicine from a recognised UK training post or equivalent

Skills

Essential

  • Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working

Clinical Governance

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
  • Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation

  • Evidence of active research interests

  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication

Teaching

Essential

  • Evidence of teaching medical students and junior doctors
