Newham University Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, is seeking a Consultant Physician in Acute and General (Internal) Medicine to join our growing Acute Medicine team on a 12-month fixed-term, full-time basis (10 PAs). The post has been created to strengthen consultant staffing at the hospital’s front door and comes at an exciting time: the Division of Medicine has adopted a newly agreed two-directorate operating model, with Acute Medicine now sitting within the new Urgent & Emergency Care (UEC) Directorate alongside the Emergency Department and Same Day Emergency Care. Substantive recruitment to this and further Acute Medicine consultant posts is expected within the next few months, and the post-holder would be warmly encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including all administrative dutiesassociated with patient care. To oversee the Acute Medical take, performing mid and post-take wardrounds, facilitating specialty referrals and triage. To provide an immediate medical opinion forseriously ill patients at the request of junior medical staff.2. Leadership, development and organisation of the services in their charge in line with the Trusts’business plans. Liaison and communication with the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director for AcuteMedicine and the General Manager for Medicine3. Development of their own interests and sub-specialties within the specialty, including activeparticipation in Research, Audit and Quality Improvement Programmes.4. Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.5. To provide evidence-based care.6. To have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out within the site and Trustguidelines.7. To liaise effectively and on a timely basis with colleagues within the department, other clinicalspecialties within the Trust, General Practitioners, community services, and all healthcare agencies.8. To maintain and promote team and multi-disciplinary work, working closely and regularly with theconsultant medical staff.9. To provide cover for annual and study leave colleagues so far as is practicable.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCP or Equivalent Specialist qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with license to practice
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of date of advisory appointments committee via one of the following: a. Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview)
  • Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
  • European Community Rights

Desirable

  • Evidence of participation in research (peer reviewed publications etc.)
  • A higher degree (MD,PhD)

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Higher specialist training in Specialty Interest and General Internal Medicine or Acute Medicine
  • Broad experience in GIM/Acute Medicine
  • Current ALS certificate

Desirable

  • Experience in Same Day Emergency Care.

Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Bed side teaching

Desirable

  • Formal teaching experiences on courses e.g. PACES

Knowledge

Essential

  • GIM and of the specialist skills required for this post
  • Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients
  • Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to life-long learning

Skills

Essential

  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of supervising medical staff
  • Ability to teach medical students and junior medical and nursing staff.
  • Ability to manage staff and resources effectively
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs nurses and other agencies
  • IT Skills

  • Ability to motivate busy clinicians to engage in teaching
  • Ability to develop research projects and supervise trainees in their research
