Consultant Psychiatrist – Swindon Community CAMHS: Sponsorship Available

Job summary

We are recruiting for a full-time Consultant Psychiatrist to join Swindon Community CAMHS and work with a well-established multi-disciplinary team at Marlborough House in Swindon.

You’ll provide psychiatric clinical input and leadership within a recently redesigned service delivering targeted mental health care to children and young people with severe and enduring mental health needs through our Getting More Help pathway.

You’ll work in partnership within the multidisciplinary team for the clinical management of patients. This will include risk assessment, the assessment of the needs of carers, and the development of services to meet the needs of patients and families for whom the team is responsible.

You’ll work 10 programmed activities with a job plan typically comprising 75% direct clinical care and 25% supporting professional activities, in line with Royal College of Psychiatrists’ guidance. Opportunities are available to develop interests in service development, quality improvement, and teaching and training within a well-established, supportive multidisciplinary team and consultant peer group.

Main duties of the job

• Provide clinical leadership and medical input to the team
• Responsibility for those patients you see yourself, together with those patients seen by medical staff directly supervised by you
• With other consultants in the team, you will have responsibility for the clinical governance as clinical leads for the team.
• The team will assess all emergencies referred to it within a day of referral. When necessary, this will include responsibility for Mental Health Act assessment of patients.
• Work in partnership within the multidisciplinary team for the clinical management of patients. This will include risk assessment, the assessment of the needs of carers, and the development of services to meet the needs of patients and families for whom the team is responsible. Consultant Psychiatrists within the Swindon team have a robust system to arrange cross-cover to ensure there is always a psychiatrist available to the service.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Registration

Essential

• Medical degree
• Full GMC registration
• Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview)
• Eligible for Section 12 Approval (Mental Health Act)/ Approved Clinician or willing to apply for such approval once in post

Desirable

• MSc or higher degree
• Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)

Experience

Essential

• Experience of clinical work in specialty at SpR, SAS/Specialist grade or consultant level within the last 3 years
• Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act
• Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices

Desirable

• Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health
• Experience of working at consultant level in an inpatient environment
