Job summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Consultant in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery to join our dynamic and forward-thinking Breast Unit. The successful candidate will bring advanced oncoplastic expertise, including therapeutic mammoplasty and reconstructive techniques, and will play a key role in delivering high-quality theatre, outpatient, and cancer pathway activity. You will work as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team, providing senior clinical leadership, driving service development, and ensuring timely, patient-centred care.

In addition to excellent clinical and operative skills, you will demonstrate strong communication, teaching, and supervisory abilities, supporting the development of junior medical staff and contributing to ongoing service improvement, audit, and governance. Main duties of the job

• Provide specialist oncoplastic breast surgery care, including assessment, diagnosis, and management of benign and malignant breast conditions.
• Deliver a full range of oncoplastic procedures, including therapeutic mammoplasty and reconstructive techniques.
• Lead and participate in theatre lists, outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary meetings, and cancer pathway activity.
• Ensure high-quality clinical decision-making and safe management of complex breast disease.
• Organise and manage personal clinical workload effectively to support timely patient care and cancer waiting time standards.
• Contribute to service development, quality improvement, and innovation within the breast unit.
• Supervise, support, and teach junior medical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Apply research evidence to clinical practice and participate in audit, governance, and continuous service improvement.
• Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, relatives, colleagues, GPs, and partner agencies.
• Maintain professional development, meet revalidation requirements, and engage in continuing medical education.
• Work flexibly, demonstrate leadership, and contribute positively to team functioning, especially during periods of service pressure.
• Uphold high standards of professionalism, empathy, and patient-centred care.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or equivalent (FRCS)

Desirable

• Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview
• Postgraduate thesis
• MD/MSc/MMEd
• Completed fellowship programme in breast surgery

Clinical Experience

Essential

• Clinical Training and experience in oncoplastic breast surgery equivalent to that required of a UK CCST.
• Statement regarding appropriate training and experience including that relating to a specialist interest
• Excellent clinical skills and substantial experience of benign and malignant breast conditions
• Experience in oncoplastic techniques such as therapeutic mammoplasty and reconstruction
• Excellent practical skills in the full range of breast clinical problems
• Good understanding of the management of breast disease

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential

• Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
• Leadership skills to take forward service developments
• Computing and IT skills

Desirable

• Evidence of management and administration experience.

Teaching

Essential

• Demonstrable ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role
• Experience of supervising junior medical staff

• Higher degree

• Ability to convert research evidence into clinical practice
