Job summary

Applications are invited to apply for three posts in Neonatal Medicine based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Headley Way, Oxford OX3 9DU.

The appointee will be expected to participate in the on-call rota and may be required to work on any other site as required by the OUH Trust in the future

The successful applicant will join a team of 9 existing consultants.

The new appointee will have the opportunity to work closely with an experienced senior clinical team and established MDT.

Main duties of the job

The job plan is divided into attending time for

a) Intensive care and Transport service

b) Intensive Care, Low Dependency

c) High dependency and Fetal Medicine

d) Follow-up and neurodevelopmental clinics

An indicative timetable and Job Plan are set out below. The final Job Plan for the post will be agreed with the clinical director upon appointment. During the day there are three consultants on service – 2 consultants cover ITU (16 cots) and one consultant covers HDU. One of the ITU consultant also covers the transport service. Consultant shift times and onsite attendance requirements vary by activity block and are set out in the timetable below. The night-time consultant is non-resident after the stated onsite period, with backup consultant cover available if needed. There are two consultants over the weekend.

Professional qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC with licence to practice
  • MBChB or equivalent
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • On the GMC’s Specialist Register OR CCT date within 6 months of AAC scheduled interview date

Desirable

  • Higher medical degree

Professional training

Essential

  • Certificate of completion of training (CCT) or equivalent in paediatrics
  • Completion of competencies for sub-specialty training in paediatrics (neonatal medicine) or equivalent
  • APLS, BLS or equivalent in date
  • Valid level 3 or equivalent safeguarding training

Desirable

  • Instructor in Neonatal Life Support
  • Transport Training

Experience

Essential

  • Work experience – A wide experience in the management of all aspects of neonatal intensive care at regional level.
  • Level of responsibility – Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level in a NICU and to manage complex clinical problems.

Desirable

  • Experience gained at several regional centers in UK or abroad.
  • Experience in neonatal transport
  • Experience in specialist areas which complements those of the existing consultants

  • Leadership skills – Excellent leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
