Consultant in Paediatric Rheumatology and Chronic Pain (2 x Part-Time)

Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) is delighted to invite applications for two part-time substantive Consultant posts: one in Paediatric Rheumatology, the other in Paediatric Rheumatology and Chronic Pain.

Bristol Royal Hospital for Children brings together all paediatric subspecialties on a single site, providing exceptional opportunities for integrated patient care, teaching, and service development.These are newly created permanent posts, offering an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continued development of two highly regarded specialist services.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will join an established team of consultants delivering a tertiary paediatric rheumatology service for children and young people across Bristol and the South West. In addition, one post will become part of the highly specialist multidisciplinary team at the nationally commissioned Bath Centre for Pain Services, which has an outstanding national and international reputation for the assessment and management of chronic pain.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential

• Full and specialist registration in with the General Medical Council (GMC) or
• Eligible for specialist registration within 12 months of interview

Desirable

• Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent

Experience

Essential

• Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in paediatric rheumatology (and chronic pain for post 2)
• Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision

Desirable

• Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust’s service strategy

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential

• Up to date knowledge and experience of diagnosing and managing paediatric rheumatology diseases and musculoskeletal complaints
• Post 2 – Up to date knowledge on assessing young people with chronic pain conditions and managing their care within a large interdisciplinary team
• Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty

Desirable

• Broad range of IT skills

Clinical Governance and Audit

Essential

• Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
• Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
• Positive approach to evidence based practice
• Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation

Research

Essential

• Knowledge of the principles involved in research
• Evidence of involvement in research
• Evidence of peer review research papers

Desirable

• Ability to increase the academic profile of the department
• Evidence of participating in research within musculoskeletal / chronic pain arena

Teaching and Training

Essential

• Experience of teaching medical students.
• Experience of supervising trainees
• Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team

• Formal teaching qualification
• Accreditation as Educational Supervisor

Management & Leadership

Essential

• Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it
• Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
• Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant
• Ability to practice independently as a consultant
• Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership
• Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks
