An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the nationally recognised Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. As part of one of the UKs largest paediatric neuromuscular services, you will provide highly specialised care for children and young people with rare and complex neuromuscular disorders, while contributing to innovative therapies, research and service development.

You will deliver expert clinical care across specialist clinics, multidisciplinary services and advanced therapy programmes. The post offers opportunities to contribute to teaching, research, clinical trials and quality improvement within a leading tertiary centre.

Applicants must hold GMC Specialist Registration (or be eligible within six months) and have substantial experience in paediatric neurology and neuromuscular disorders within a tertiary setting. A commitment to clinical excellence, research, education and multidisciplinary working is essential.

Main duties of the job

9/10 PAs of this Neuromuscular consultant post will provide additional support to the clinical service. 1 PA will be for Neurology service weeks.

The post holder will form part of a multidisciplinary team, participating in general and disease-specific outpatient clinics, and day cases for the assessment, diagnosis and management of neuromuscular disorders and communicating with parents, local referral teams about investigation and management plans. Participation in audit and teaching is expected. The appointee will have a balanced job plan, which focuses on clinical practice, with opportunities to participate in the Dubowitz neuromuscular team teaching and training opportunities and to participate in the specialised MDT meetings including the weekly muscle pathology meeting and complex cases meeting.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

Essential

  • GMC specialist registration with a Licence to Practice (obtained by designated start date)
  • On the GMC’s Specialist Register OR within six months of CCT at time of scheduled interview
  • CCST or equivalent accreditation (or anticipated to be accredited in the next one year) in Paediatrics or another relevant specialty with a sub-specialty interest in paediatric neurology or equivalent, with relevance to paediatric neuromuscular disorders.
  • Applicants who have made a Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) application must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application
  • MRCP, MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Practical experience in clinical Paediatric Neuromuscular and Neurology Medicine.
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
  • Valid BLS Training

Desirable

  • Higher degree – PhD, MD or equivalent
  • Formal teaching qualifications
  • Leadership qualification
  • CCT or equivalent accreditation in Paediatrics or another relevant specialty with a sub-specialty interest in paediatric neurology or equivalent, with relevance to paediatric neuromuscular disorders.
  • Valid APLS and NLS (this may be mandatory for some posts).

Experience/Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience in Paediatric neurology and Neuromuscular Disorders in a Tertiary Centre
  • Experience of leading in Clinical Audit processes

Desirable

  • Published research in peer reviewed journals in relevant area
  • Awareness of the importance of Clinical Governance through experience of participating in quality or safety improvement projects
  • Experience of recruiting patients to clinical research trials
  • Experience of working in shared care clinics and clinical networks: Northstar and SmartNet and its forms
  • Experience of clinical leadership or management
  • Experience of teaching students and multi-disciplinary team
