Job summary

We are looking to appoint a full-time substantive Consultant Gastroenterologist to join the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Directorate at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based across the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Northern General Hospital. This is an excellent opportunity to join one of the UK’s largest and most academically active gastroenterology services.

Main duties of the job

The post comprises a 10 PA job plan, including 8.5 PAs Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 PAs Supporting Professional Activities.

The Directorate operates a rotational on-ward/off-ward model. Off-ward weeks include three outpatient clinics and two endoscopy lists, alongside referral grading, administration and SPA. On-ward weeks include consultant-led ward rounds, ward cover, outpatient activity, administration and SPA.

The successful applicant will participate in the Gastroenterology and Hepatology on-call and gastrointestinal bleeding rotas, currently approximately 1 in 20, and contribute to the Consultant of the Day service for acute specialist take and out-of-hours gastrointestinal bleeding.

The successful candidate will also contribute to teaching, research, clinical governance, quality improvement and service development.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within 6 months of interview
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview. If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within 6 months of award of CCT by date of interview
  • MRCP or equivalent

Desirable

  • MD or PhD or equivalent

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Clinical experienceAbility to work as an independent practitioner in Gastroenterology.
  • Possess broad clinical experience in the general aspects of the post.
  • Endoscopic experience for 5 years with appropriate JAG accreditation.
  • Evidence of advanced training in Inflammatory Bowel Disease OR Evidence of advanced training in Nutrition OR Evidence of advanced training in Endoscopy.

Desirable

  • Some experience of management of patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Research

Essential

  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate.

Desirable

  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.

Teaching and training

Essential

  • Experience of teaching medical students and resident doctors

Continuous Professional Development

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months

Desirable

  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Management and Administration

Essential

  • Evidence of ability to work with management and previous experience of management groups
  • Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management

Clinical governance and audit

Essential

  • Experience in performing clinical audit

Desirable

  • Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project
