Post 2: Consultant for Critical Care Medicine with a special interest in Critical Care Outreach.

Rated overall as ‘Good’ in its 2019 CQC inspection and with a reputation as one of the safest Trusts in England, Whittington Health (WH), an Integrated Care Organisation in North London, is looking to recruit two Critical Care consultants. One with a joint appointment in anaesthesia and another as Critical Care stand alone with an interest in critical care outreach. PA split is within the job description for the roles.

Whittington Health NHS Trust is a main teaching hospital site for University College London Medical School. We are located at Archway, North London, close to both Highgate Village and Islington. The hospital serves a socio-economic community and culturally diverse population of some 500,000.

Full registration with the GMC and acceptance on the GMC Specialist Register are required and you should hold a CCT/CESR, or be within six months of obtaining it by the time of interview.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry onto the Specialist Register via CCT in ICM or CESR in ICM (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)
  • Higher Qualification in Critical Care Medicine
  • FFICM or European Diploma in ICM
  • For split posts with Anaesthetics; CCT in Anaesthetics or CESR in Anaesthetics (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview)

Desirable

  • Formal ECHO/Ultrasound trainer & qualifications

Special interest

Essential

  • Experience and training in intensive care medicine to the levels set for CCT (or equivalent training) by FICM
  • Experience of ICU Outreach working
  • Knowledge and clinical experience of treatment escalation planning.

Desirable

  • Knowledge and clinical experience of anaesthetics/ICM commensurate with working at consultant level
  • Specialist knowledge of data science as applied to critical care

Teaching

Essential

  • Evidence of effective teaching & training skills

Desirable

  • Formal teaching qualification
  • Life support instructor

Research

Essential

  • Ability to appraise evidence and to undertake relevant research

Desirable

  • An interest in research as evidenced by publications relevant to critical care
  • PhD

Communication skills

Essential

  • Knowledge and skills in various techniques and procedures appropriate for intensive care and the critically ill patient
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and patients

Aware of national policies, quality initiatives

Essential

  • Familiarity with UK Critical Care Standards as outlined in GPICS

Desirable

  • Familiarity with Critical Care Networks

Management ability

Essential

  • Knowledge of NHS developments around critical care including Commissioning.
  • Evidence of the ability to lead a team
  • Commitment to effective departmental management

Desirable

  • Experience of ICU budgeting.

Audit

Essential

  • Evidence of completion of audit and quality improvement projects leading to improved clinical care

Desirable

  • Familiarity with ICNARC data collection & reporting
